Family Histories: Encinas

Florence, Arizona November 10. 1995

Reverend Bryan Sherry J.C.L.
Church of the Assumption
Florence, Arizona

Reverend Sherry,

As the Church of the Assumption celebrates it's 125th anniversary, it is very fitting that pioneer families of Florence and the Church be remembered.

The David Encinas family was one of those pioneer families, whose origin here in Florence, can be traced for several generations back. They were active not only in the community, but also in the Catholic Church.

David Encinas Sr. came to this area in the early or middle eighteen hundreds and died in 1900. His wife, Carmen de Encinas, was born 1856 and died 1936. Both are buried at our local cemetery.

David and Carmen had a large family consisting of 3 girls, Catalina, Petra and Maria and 7 boys, Santiago, Abran, Francisco, Manuel, Alfredo, Juan and David Jr.

The family lived in the Adamsville area near Florence which at that time was known as Sanford. During the depression years, most of the boys left the area for the state of California, while a few family members remained here in the Florence area.

David Jr was one of the ones that remained here in Adamsville and later moved into the actual town of Florence where he worked as a brick layer or mason, so it is very probable that he must have helped in the construction of our present Church.

David Encinas Jr. married Juanita Moreno Herrera and had eight children, Carmen, Susanna, Maria Consuelo, Maria Amparo and Rita also David III, Jose and Efren. Most of this family was born and lived in what was known as the Federico house here in Florence.

The David Encinas family has certainly been one that has made it's contributions to the Florence area and to the Catholic Church; the Church of the Assumption, and it expresses it's congratulations.
