Altar Servers:

The Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass in a variety of ways. They lead the entrance and recessional processions. They bring the collection forward. They set up for Mass and clean up afterwards. To be an Altar Server, you must be in at least 3rd grade; you must be a baptized Catholic and have received your First Holy Communion; and you must participate in Religious Education. New Altar Servers are trained by the Pastor and are then assigned to one of ten teams of Altar Servers. The Altar Servers meet with the Pastor every three months, at a day and time determined by the Pastor. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Bingo:

Bingo is a fund-raising activity of Assumption Parish. Proceeds are used to help in retiring the debt owed on Phelan Hall. Bingo is offered each Monday evening at 6:30 PM from November through April in Phelan Hall. Bingo operates in accord with all state and local guidelines. All are welcome to participate as players or as helpers. Cash prizes are given to lucky winners. For more information, please contact Henry and Diane Ulloa.

Cenacle Prayer Group:

The Cenacle of the Immaculate Heart Prayer Group meets each Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM in the Church. This group is organized according to the spirit of the Marian Movement of Priests. There are no restrictions on membership. For more information, please contact Angie Desmarais.

Charismatic Prayer Group:

The Charismatic Prayer Group gathers together to pray in the Holy Spirit and to open their hearts to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are no restrictions on membership. For more information, please contact Earlene Ruiz.

Choirs:

The Choirs provide music for weekend Masses and special Masses, such as the Triduum, Confirmations and Christmas. The Mariachi Choir provides music in Spanish and often sings at Wakes and Funerals. Practices are generally held in the home of the director of the Choir, Olga Cathemer. There are no restrictions on membership. For more information, please contact Olga Cathemer.

Cinco de Mayo Committee:

The Cinco de Mayo is our annual Parish festival and is generally held during the first weekend of May. Proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo support the Parish and are usually used to help retire the debt owed on Phelan Hall. The Cinco de Mayo Committee meets throughout the year to plan all aspects of this event. In addition, the Cinco de Mayo Committee has planned and produced other parish events, such as the Novemberfest held in November of 1998 and the Valentine's Dance held in February of 1999. Cursillo:

The Cursillo is a nationwide program designed to nourish and deepen the faith of individual Catholics, and to provide an environment for ongoing development of spirituality in its members. To join the Cursillo movement, you must participate in a weekend Cursillo Retreat. For more information, please contact Earlene Ruiz.

Eucharistic Ministers:

Eucharistic Ministers assist with the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass. In addition, Eucharistic Ministers may be called upon to lead a weekday Communion Service in the absence of the Pastor or to bring Holy Communion to the homebound. To become a Eucharistic Minister, you must be a baptized Catholic living in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church. All necessary training and instruction will be provided by the Pastor. Funeral Luncheons:

It is the custom here at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish to provide a free luncheon after all funerals held in the Parish. This luncheon takes place in Phelan Hall immediately following the Interment at the graveside. Parishioners donate food for this luncheon and the Parish provides all utensils. Hospitality Program:

The Hospitality Program provides snacks and drinks after the Sunday morning Masses between November and April. All snacks and drinks are donated by Parishioners, and especially by the members of the Hospitality Program. You are invited to participate by setting up and serving on one or two Sunday mornings during the year, or by providing snacks or drinks as frequently as you would like. Knights of Columbus:

The Knights of Columbus is a nationwide organization designed to encourage Catholic men in faith, as well as in works of charity and self-sacrifice. The Knights of Columbus meet on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM in Phelan Hall. To be a member of the Knights of Columbus, you must be a practicing Catholic man and you must participate in an initiation ceremony. Fees and dues are charged to all members of the Knights of Columbus to support its work on a local, state and national basis. For more information, please contact Ray Ortega.

Lectors:

Lectors proclaim the scriptures at Mass and also announce hymns, read the general intercessions and make other announcements. To be a Lector, you must be a baptized and practicing Catholic. All necessary training and information will be provided. For more information, please contact Olga Cathemer.

Liturgy Committee:

The Liturgy Committee meets monthly at the discretion of the Pastor to plan and organize the liturgical celebrations of the Parish. There are no restrictions on membership in this committee. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Parish Council:

The Parish Council meets monthly to discuss issues of importance to the Parish, such as coming events, projects and policies. The Parish Council is composed of leaders of all Parish groups and organizations along with four members appointed by the Pastor. Meetings are usually held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM. All Parishioners are welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Prayer Chain:

The Prayer Chain is an association of individuals who have promised to pray for intentions brought before them by individuals in need. This group does not meet together, but rather prays in their own homes. There are no restrictions on membership. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Religious Education:

Religious Education provides instruction in the Catholic Faith for children and adults alike. Classes for children are arranged according to grade. Classes for adults include a Bible Study and an Adult Education Class which addresses a variety of topics throughout the year. There are no restrictions on participation in Religious Education. Registration is required for all children, but adults need not register to participate. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Rosary Prayer Group:

The Rosary Prayer Group meets each Thursday evening at 6:00 PM. Members pray the Rosary together for the intentions of members and for intentions brought to them. There are no restrictions on membership in this group. For more information, please contact Bertha Cabanillas.

Social Concerns Committee:

The Social Concerns Committee is one of the newest groups in the Parish, and is our attempt to respond to and participate in the Church's Social Mission. This committee will concern itself with searching for ways in which we as a Parish and as individuals can participate in the Church's Social Mission. In particular, this Committee will concern itself with the following issues: advocacy for social issues, Pro-Life activities and environmental issues. In addition, the Social Concerns Committee with cooperate with the St. Nicholas Ministry in providing direct service to the needy. There are no requirements for membership in this committee. St. Nicholas Ministry:

This is the newest ministry in our Parish. Those involved in the St. Nicholas Ministry seek to assist in various ways the poor in our Parish and in our area. That is, there is no requirement that a person be Catholic in order to receive the help of the St. Nicholas Ministry. The activities of this ministry include but are not limited to the following: distribution of canned food to the needy, assistance with financial aid for utilities and housing, and assitance in contacting various public and private service organizations. Ushers:

The Ushers assist in a variety of ways to help people feel welcome when they attend our Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses. They may greet you at the door and open the door for you. They may help you to find a seat if the church is full. The Ushers also assist by gathering the collections during Mass and making sure that the gifts are brought forward to the altar. Ushers should be practicing Catholics. For more information, please contact the Pastor.

Youth Group:

The Youth Group is composed of members of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish who are in grades 7 thru 12. This group engages in social, service and recreational activities. Meetings are held after the second Mass each Sunday. All members are required to participation in Religious Education during the week. For more information, please contact the Pastor.
