Family Histories: Gomes

During World War II, A. E. "Bud" Gomes, was stationed just north of Florence at the Prisoner of War Camp. It was during this time that Bud started attending the Assumption Church, some 50 years ago. He was a devote Catholic and was very active in church functions. He and his wife Evelyn had three children, Carol, Penny and Mark. Bud and the children attended Mass regularly. His children attended Catechism, received their First Holy Communions and Confirmations. Bud was a member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in Mass as a Lecter. On Sundays, after Mass, he would help count the collection. He also helped with whatever needed to be done both at the church and the Rectory. At Christmas time, he and his children, along with a few other church members, would help decorate the Church for the holidays. During the Cinco de Mayo he would always have a booth, where he would prepare hamburgers and help raise money for the church. Now Bud is in the Nursing Home and unable to attend Mass, but in his heart, he will always be a part of the Assumption Church.

On behalf of our Dad and ourselves, we would like to congratulate and wish the church a very Happy 125th Birthday.

Bud, Carol, Penny and Mark Gomes
