Family Histories: The Joe C. Martinez Family
Reverend Bryan W. Sherry, J.C.L. Church of the Assumption 221 East 8th St. Florence, AZ. 85232
Dear Father Sherry,
On behalf of the Joe C. and Carmen Martinez family, we would like to congratulate the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as we celebrate the 125th Anniversary of this beautiful church on this day of November 18, 1995.
Joe and Carmen got married in 1962 in Eloy’s St. Helen's Catholic Church. The Martinez family came to Florence in 1963. Joe, at that time, was working at the Arizona State Prison, which he had been working for since 1961, and decided to make a career of this job. At the present time, he is retired and Carmen is still working for the Florence Unified School District, and has been for the last sixteen years. We have been a part of this church and community all these years.
Our children were very fortunate to receive their sacraments here. Our oldest daughter, Priscilla, was married to Andy Rodriguez, in this church, in 1986. She had her children, Andrea and Andy Rodriguez, baptized here. Our middle daughter, Dora, also had her daughter, Crystin, baptized here. The youngest daughter, Mary, received all her sacraments here. She was born in Florence in 1974 and, at this time, is going to college at N.A.U. Priscilla is working at Perryville, in Goodyear, AZ., and Dora is an R.N. at St. Joseph's Hospital, in Phoenix.
We have become godparents to several children in this parish, and Carmen, at one time, was a catechism teacher, from 1984 to 1988.
This family has been involved with this beautiful church and its clubs and celebrations for a long time, and we can honestly say that our great memories go back a few years.
Sincerely,
Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Martinez
