Family Histories:
THE SEPULVEDA FAMILY
Rosendo Castro Sepulveda
Mother: Josefa Castro
Father: Primitino Sepulveda
Born in Sonora, Mexico, on February l2th, 1908, Rosendo was smuggled into the United States as a newborn, with his mother and relatives. A United States birth certificate was obtained and he was raised in Florence, Arizona, by his mother and a great aunt. When his mother remarried, while he was still very young, the great aunt, Manuela Urrea, took over and completed his upbringing, with his mother close by. Rosendo attended grammar school until the 5th grade, at which time he decided (probably through necessity) to leave school and go to work.
He had many different types of jobs as a young man, including card dealer, gout worker (Federal) and laborer. He also worked as a miner, which later took its toll on his health. He was an avid reader and became self-taught in the areas of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. He later applied this knowledge to his love of carpentry, the field he remained in until his death.
In the Church of The Assumption, at the age of 19 years, he married Mary Meneses, and four children were born as a result of this union. They were Adeline, Rosendo Jr., Oscar and Eleanor.
Rosendo tried very hard to be a good father. He was loving but stern, and especially gentle with his girls. He tried to instill good values in all his children, such as making sure that they were all baptized in the church and went to church. He had many lifelong friends, as good friends were an important part of his life. Music was always a part of his life as well.
Rosendo was not in good health and there times in his adult life when ill health prevented him from doing even the most important things in his life, such as working. During his years as a miner in Superior, he developed TB and, at the age of thirty-nine, Rosendo died. The cause of his death was diagnosed as tetanus (lockjaw).
At the age of thirty-nine he had fathered twelve children; eleven in two marriages and one love child. Had he lived, he would have a total of thirty-four grandchildren now.
