Assumption Parish, Elfrida

On October 5, 1977, the Barnabites were welcomed to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.
Assumption Parish is on Hamilton mountain, at the intersection of Highways 53 and 20. The community is comprised of mostly Italian and Dutch families.
Recently, a spacious rectory and a church hall were completed.

On Sunday, 25 June 2006, Fr. Louis M. Lenssen celebrated Mass for the last time at Our Lady of the Assumption. The Barnabites returned to the Diocese of Hamilton this Parish where they had been ministering since 1977 and where they built a new rectory and a new parish center. The Sunday before, 18 June 2006, Bishop Gerard Paul Bergie celebrated Mass at the Parish to thank the Barnabites for their ministry and bid them farewell.

The decision to withdraw from the Parish was difficult and painful for both parishioners and Barnabites. The reasons that forced this decision are mentioned in the letter that the provincial Superior addressed to the Parish. The content of the letter can be read by clicking here.
