Myanmar Update…

Sr. Anne Tan and I left for Myanmar on the 21st of February 2003; we were to stay till the 3rd of March. The country at that time was undergoing a critical period as the Central Banks were controlling the amount of cash flow and the political, economic and social climate was rather unstable and not altogether safe for foreigners.

The visit was a watershed one as a new direction in our Myanmar Mission emerged at the end of the 12-day visit. Five young women [who had been our aspirants] manifested their desire for more time before joining the Postulancy. The other four asked specifically to be able to go home to help their families. As such, on 14 March, Sr. Marie De Roza and Sr. Mary Yong who had been in Myanmar since December 2002, returned to Singapore.

We will work towards an annual or bi-annual Mission Outreach in Myanmar (Taunggyi). The Archbishop of Taunggyi agreed to our arrangement and looked forward to a systematic formation programme for the Minor Seminary and the Seminary For Missionary priests at Kalaw. We too, look forward to meeting the young women and their contacts whenever we go to Taunggyi. Archbishop Matthias offered us his house in Yangon as a base for our Mission Outreach to Taunggyi. With these new developments, we will continue to pray that God will manifest his plans for us in Myanmar.
