"With the advent of computer telecommunications and what are known as computer participation systems, the Church is offered further means for fulfilling her mission. Methods of facilitating communication and dialogue among her own members can strengthen the bonds of unity between them. Immediate access to information makes it possible for her to deepen her dialogue with the contemporary world."

-- Pope John Paul II, World Communications Day, May 27, 1989

CATHOIC/CHRISTIAN BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEMS (For more advanced users):

A Bulletin Board System (BBS) is a small online computer network which enables users to chat with each other, leave E-mail, and exchange files. There are approximately 60,000 individual BBS's active in the United States. Some BBS's have only a hundred or so members. Others count hundreds of thousands of members. The largest, a bulletin board in Wisconisn named "EXEC PC, counts close to a million members!
The level of networking does not end here. Many of these BBS's have further organized themselves into super-networks which may contain anywhere from a dozen to several thousand individual BBS's. To join one of these networks (most are free), call the network data line and download (copy to your computer) a short file of instructions for joining the network. The System Operator, known as a Sysop" ,is the person responsible for supervising a BBS or even an entire network of BBS's. The Catholic Information Network is one such Network.

THE CATHOLIC INFORMATION NETWORK: http://www.cin.org http://www.stgabriel.com The Catholic Information Network (CIN) is a Bulletin Board System (BBS) Network developed by Sharon and Mike Mollerus in San Diego, CA, and "echoed" (the messages are copied and posted) by several hundred BBS's worldwide. Thirty of these BBS's are officially registered as nodes (extensions) of the CIN, which means that these local BBS's serve as a local "gateway" for entering the Catholic Information Network. By calling one of these lcoal numbers, you may tap into the majority of CIN files and conference areas, where important church issues are discussed. Note: The CIN is wholly distinct from the Catholic Resource Network (CRNET). The CIN Host (Registered) Nodes are listed on the following page. To dial the listed phone numbers from outside the United States, use the International Dialing Code plus the US country prefix, which is 1. Many of these BBSs offer their own distinct files and services as well as echoing the CIN: TO CONTACT CIN: Send submissions to: Sysop@catinfo.cts.com Questions: root@catinfo.cts.com CIN COMMANDS: INDEX Asks for the host's list of public files GET Gets anything starting with file name CIN NODE LIST: Each of the following Bulletin Board Systems carries the Catholic Information Network: Phone number BBS Name System Operator Location 203-934-4641 Fr.
