Chapter 8
Tips in Replying Mails to the List

If you reply to a mail from the mailing list, it will go directly back to the mailing list. Most mailer programs like ELM will include (eccclc@yahoogroups.com) in the "To:" reply address in the mail automatically.

Always make sure if you want to make a public reply or a private reply, and check for the address in the "To:" column if this confirms your choice.

A) Additional Notes for PINE Users

For PINE users, the following message will appear as you make a reply:

Use "Reply to:" address instead of "From:" address? (y/n) [y]
"Reply to:" means the mailing list address (eccclc@onelist.com) & "From:" means the original sender's address.

As a result, if you want to make a public reply, press 'y', and for a private reply, press 'n'.

B) Addtional Notes for ELM users

For "elm" users, if you wish to make a private reply, you must note the original sender's address. After having written the reply, when the message

And now: s

appears, press "h" to change the "To:" header.

C) Additional Notes for MAIL users

For "mail" users outside Waterloo, it is not possible to reply to the original sender. To make a private reply, you must note the original sender's address and use the mail ("m") command instead.

For "mail" users within Waterloo, you can use the "Ri" command. If you wish to make a private reply, you can then use the "~V" command. This brings up the editor (usually vi). You can then delete the "eccclc@yahoogroups.com" in the "To:" header and paste the original sender's address there.
