Footnotes 1:

* Except for Vol. 1 which shares the copyright with The Edwin Mellen Press (Lewiston,

NY: 1993), Vol. 2 was published by Grace Institute of the Holy Eucharist. The rest of the

volumes of A Handbook of Theology of Energy shall also be published by Grace Institute of

the Holy Eucharist. For further information on the author's works and their acquisition,

**Volume 1 is a distillation of Theology of Energy. All the other volumes are a series of

important footnotes or elaboration of this first volume of A Handbook of Theology of

Energy. Also, the order of publication may not necessarily follow the numerical order

shown above.

***Can the author complete so many of them? The same question was asked many times

during 1995 to 1998 when he was trying to complete the twelve areas on grace for this

website (cf. the front homepage of the present website). The bottom line, frankly speaking,

is God's unsurpassable will. After everything is said and done by him, it is only God's

everlasting will which can sustain and fulfill this human venture (cf. Jn 15:16). Praise God!

Everything being considered, it seems much better for the author to complete properly just

a few of volumes of A Handbook of Theology of Energy, rather than to rush through the

whole series. After all, Volume 1 of this series, imperfect as it is, can present itself as a

sound distillation of what this new or renewing theology is all about. Every additional

volume afterwards becomes just another bonus or elaboration of the whole enterprise.

Looking afar and envisioning the fulfillment from here, the author can see a series of A

Handbook of Theology of Energy --- varying from just to quite a few volumes --- presenting

Itself systematically on the altar as his priceless lifework or unconditional gift to the

whole Divine Heavenly Family. Alleluia!

What would happen if the author and his colleagues could not complete all the 33 volumes

within the next thirty years or so? Others would complete them afterwards. Since others

might do better later, it could be a blessing in disguise for all parties.

Why are so many volumes left undone, varying from 1% to 90%? It is simply because of their

interconnectedness or interconnectivity. If God is willing, they would be done in due time

(cf. Ps 127:1).

What would happen if all the 33 volumes are completed? It would be just a beginning of

revising or upgrading the contents of the various volumes. Hence, there is no hurry ahead.

Otherwise, we are only asking for a major revision.

What would happen if the revision of the various volumes is properly completed? Normally, as

history informs us, this is what would happen when a new renewing theology has been

tested and re-tested for a long time as genuine, abounding with God-pleasing and

world-changing qualities. Probably, one, or more, or all, or even more of the following

blessings might take place (the author by then should be having a nice time partying

without end with the whole Divine Heavenly Family):

a) The revised version would begin to appear in different theological libraries around the

world; b) Grace Institute of the Holy Eucharist would begin its international journal on

Theology of Energy; c) This institute would be affiliated with some university, beginning

to offer courses and various degree programs; d) Many more volumes would begin to be

added to A Handbook of Theology of Energy; e) Other denominations, universities and

faculties of theology might start their own versions or institutes of Theology of Energy; f)

Some scholars might begin putting together An Encyclopedia of Energy (or Energies); g)

Grace Institute might begin offering advice and lectures on Theology of Energy to the

different institutes, seminaries, bishop conferences, universities, colleges, school boards

and special interest groups, etc.; h) As a new renewing school of theology which works,

Grace Institute might have its own school building; i) Above all, having known and

experienced God's Uncreated Energy (i.e., God's grace) systematically, countless scholars

and lay would be embracing the whole Divine Heavenly Family and the three greatest

Treasures of the Church (i.e., the living Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, Our Heavenly

Mother and the Magisterium headed by the Pope) in unspeakable joy. Overflowing with

God's radiant love, grace and truth, they would reach out in gratitude, prayer and action to

help the whole Divine Heavenly Family evangelize others and transform the world; j) If

such a vision (as pictured above in i) should happen, the mission or the three purposes of

Theology of Energy would be accomplished. Alleluia! Glory, honour and praise forever be

to God, the Most Holy Trinity, who is All in all of the Divine Heavenly Family!

The important thing for the author to do now is to rest in the Lord (cf. Ps 37:3-5), dream a

little (cf. Prov 29:18) but do a lot of foundational ground works (cf. 1Thes 5:21) for

Theology of Energy. He is completely aware of his very limitations, and yet, at the same

time, fully conscious of what God can do when His little servants follow His will or call

faithfully, with great humility, trust, obedience, as well as with boundless confidence,

delight and inner-freedom. "Now unto God who by the power at work within us is able to

do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, to God be glory in the church and in

Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen." (Eph 3:20-21)

What would happen if none of the above would happen at all? "Thy will be done, on earth as

it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10). Alleluia!

What would happen if the above mentioned would really happen in God's time? "Thy will be

done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10). Alleluia! Meanwhile, as God's will does not

want the author to dream too much, he has to resume his reading and writing. Alleluia!

Any further comments? Apparently, the long process of the above mentioned has already

started. The author is thus unspeakably grateful to the whole Divine Heavenly Family, the

two advisors of Grace Institute, his spiritual director and other unsung heroes who pray

for and give further advice and support regarding this project which might be a great

blessing to the people of God we love. At this stage, which should last for a few decades, he

is called to remain very small and focused. The time to become very big and un-focused ---

i.e., the next stage ---would indeed come. Most likely, it would be the time when he would

be partying without end with the Most Holy Trinity and the whole Family of Holy Angels

and Saints. Alleluia!

Many friends have been concerned about the progress of Theology of Energy which could have

great blessings for many. Why is it that not a single volume of such a handbook has been

published since 1995? If the author were doing Theology of Energy outside of the Church,

he might have been quite "successful" by now in accordance to the standard of the secular

world. However, he is called to do so within the Catholic Church with her long tradition,

countless great scholars, and unique way of doing things, etc. Fortunately, he has always

been given the gift of patience, among other blessings, by the Holy Spirit who is fully

responsible for what is needed for this journey. After all, have we not heard of the story of

Kant who produced nothing at all for eleven years between 1770 and 1781? But after that

foundation-making period, he then published many of his great works like Critique of Pure

Reason and Critique of Practical Reason. The author might be in a similar boat as he has

been working consistently over 30 or 40 hours each normal week directly and indirectly

on Metaphysics and Epistemology of Theology of Energy since 1995. As a metaphor, he has

been playing tennis with the Divine Heavenly Family, making sure that the ball (i.e., the

response to the direction of the Divine Heavenly Family ) is always in Their court. Alleluia!

[Update: October 20, 2000]

Is the foundation that important? It appears that there are two ways at this stage to do

Theology of Energy. The short and the long route. The short way is to jump right back in

and complete the present volume in two to three months. On the other hand, the long route

is foundation building and may easily take a few more years. The author wants "to be like a

man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood

arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well

built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground

without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin

of that house was great." (Lk 6: 48-49) Praise God! (Date: Oct. 28, 2000)

Is the foundation that important (II)? The current postmodern relativistic maelstrom or

impasse with the problem of truth, vocation and evangelization, etc. (cf. Fides et Ratio, no.

85; Dominus Jesus, no. 4; etc.), for example, is obviously in great need of some

philosophical and theological breakthrough. At least in an initial phase, the author

believes that some of the root causes and sound solution(s) may have been discovered in his

foundational research on (a) God's Uncreated Energy or Omnipresence, (b) the current

metaphysical macroparadigm shift from being to energy-being; and (c) the problem of

universals. Thanks be to Institute for URAM which has provided him with the necessary

challenge and opportunity over (a) as aforementioned, from 1995 to 1997; (b) from 1997 to

1999 --- By the way, the papers of the 1999 Energy Symposium are still alive, waiting

patiently to be edited by Prof. Kevin Sharpe, University of Oxford, who has over two dozens

doctoral theses to direct; and (c) from 1999 to 2001 --- It appears that the intellectual

position or thinking of a philosopher and theologian (or even any person, group and

historical era, etc.) is substantially affected by the conscious, subconscious or unconscious

dominant solution maintained -- or somehow acquired -- towards the problem of

universals (cf. E. A. Synan, R. G. Miller, "Universals", New Catholic Encyclopedia, 1967,

vol. 14, pp. 452-457; Curt Friedlein, Geschichte der Philosophie, 1984; etc.). In due time,

hopefully, these research results would be further refined, expanded, organized and

published in article or book form, or even summed up here on this website, as the Divine

Heavenly Family is truly pleased. Alleluia! (Update: November 13, 2000)

Is there any elaboration on the current long-term project? As a footnote, there are some

handbooks in the world, especially in Germany, which take many years, even half a century

or more to complete, e.g., the 49-volume [the number has kept growing through the years]

Handbuch der Dogmengeschichte, hrsg. von M. Schmaus, A. Kardinal Grillmeier, L.

Scheffezyk und M. Seybold (Herder: Freiburg im Breisgau, 1951ss).

Further, several ambient factors are required of a co-author of A Handbook of Theology of

Energy: 1) He or she has to love the whole Divine Heavenly Family, i.e., the Most Holy

Trinity and Its whole Family of Holy Angels and Saints --- especially the Holy Eucharist

and Our Heavenly Mother --- very much, even more than the author; 2) He or she has to

love the Roman Catholic Church likewise; 3) He or she has to be truly faithful to the

Magisterium; 4) He or she has to help champion the love of neighbours in terms of the

spiritual Gospel (promoting growth in spirit and virtues), salvational Gospel (helping

people to attain Heaven, avoiding Hell and Purgatory), evangelical Gospel (reaching out to

the world as according to Mt 28:19-20) and social Gospel (social development and

justice); 5) He or she has to have an excellent knowledge of philosophy, theology,

spirituality, hagiology, angelology, demonology, Eastern and Western Christian

mysticism, as well as a good knowledge of general humanities and science; 6) He or she has

to accept the basic principles outlined in Method of Theology of Energy, a little foretaste

or precognition of which can be found in Energy and Environment: the

Spiritual-Human-Material Nexus (Lewiston, N.Y.: The Edwin Mellen Press, 1992); 7) He

or she has to have an in-depth appreciation and knowledge of the recent Catholic

Charismatic Renewal and its teaching; 8) He or she has to have a reading knowledge of

some foreign languages such as Latin, German, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese, as

well as a working knowledge of Greek and Hebrew; 9) Besides, the work shall be done

according to the general principle of mutual respect, patience, team-work, productivity

and at times even mutual forgiveness. In this long-term project which surely would take

more than half a century, it is possible that one or more co-authors and co-editors have

already been pre-appointed by the whole Divine Heavenly Family to co-work on one or

more volumes of A Handbook of Theology of Energy. In due time, this person (or these

persons) should appear to help work on this project, gift, or labour of love for the whole

Divine Heavenly Family. There is no hurry. Alleluia! (Date: November 30, 2000)

Some adjustment has been made to our list of books above. The Compact History of the

Supernatural and Natural has become Volume 3. (Date: February 7, 2001)

One of the most important questions to ask concerning Theology of Energy is: Are these

different energies such as Divine Energy, physical energy, human energy, diabolic energy,

angelic energy, and saintly energy artificially invented or for us to discover? Insofar as

their names are concerned, they are historically, necessarily and unavoidably invented

according to different religions, cultures, traditions, conventions and authors in differing

ages. However, as regards their real [ontological] existence as such, they have really been

there since eternity, since the beginning of creation, or since time immemorial. Hence,

they are always there for us to discover.

If we substitute "energy" with its largely synonymous or similar counterparts such as

"power, light, fire, might, presence, strength, radiance, glory, ray, shine, influence, work,

force, substance, thing, or the like", we may find the Sacred Scriptures keep mentioning,

revealing or remind us about their very reality, unmistakably so (cf. Cheng, Energy and

Environment, 1993, pp. 1-90). However unsystematic, the Holy Bible is then a series of

canonized collected works concerning the origin, history, destiny, properties and theology

of various energies. Apparently, some systematic presentation is needed. This is indeed one

of the areas over which Theology of Energy can make a difference. Seriously, this biblical

study by itself would involve several dozens if not hundreds of volumes. It is clear that we

are called not to complete but only to initiate, to some extent, this endless "energy project"

called Theology of Energy. Alleluia! (Update: May 18, 2001)

Some great friends have been concerned whether we have lost our direction and

momentum, or whether we have been wasting our precious time and energy in doing

Theology [and Philosophy] of Energy. Indeed, if anyone could properly show us one thing

--- yes, only one thing --- which is not energy, physically, spiritually and humanly, we would

be happy to rethink this energy project altogether.

Besides, anybody who is not shocked by the damage or challenge posed by postmodern

relativism (e.g., by Heidigger's skepticism and destruction of the history of being, and

Derrida's deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence --- cf. Merold Westphal,

Postmodern Theology, Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, v. 7, 1998, p. 583) to the

philosophy (ontology) and theology of being --- the very chief universal and infrastructural

paradigm, transcendental, backbone or foundation of the traditional Catholic philosophy and

theology --- (thus affecting immediately and inextricably matters related to our Catholic

faith and morals) does not understand the profound concern of Pope John Paul II (cf. Fides

and Ratio, nos. 5, 51, 79, 85, etc.; "Pope to Take a Cue from Consistory", Zenit Daily, May

24, 2001) as well as our call to help renew or restore being (e.g., everything is being) in

terms of energy-being (e.g., everything is energy or energy-being). [sorry for the long

sentence above]

As Prof. Janine Langan succinctly commented earlier, our works with regards

"energy-being" are meant to "deepen" the very reality of "being". Applying the words of

Merold Westphal here, one may say that we are taking "being", in particular "[Divine]

Being", as an icon "when our gaze finds it necessary to 'transpierce' it in search of what

exceeds it, when the invisible remains invisible in its visibility, when what is presented

opens an abyss that we can never finish probing" (Westphal, ibid, p. 586). In this way, the

so-called "weak ontology" (i.e., the weak study or dealing with being and its nature) would

become immensely strong and relevant, indeed deepened, energized, existentialized,

concretized, upgraded and restored. Alleluia! So, dear friends, thank you for your concern

and prayers! May the Lord Jesus and Our Heavenly Mother be praised! (Date: May 27,

2001)

What can be said about Plato's forms and the problem of universals? By the grace of God, it

seems that many insights have been given or acquired after the two issues have been studied

for more than a year. We have fundamentally examined the whole history of Western

philosophy from the pre-Socratic period to postmodernism regarding the issues. Perhaps

we will share a little near the end of September, 2001 in our Communication with readers.

(Date: September 19, 2001)

In response to a certain request, the author would like to focus on Familization: An

Ontology of Chis over the next 12 months or so. (Date: October 25, 2001)

Out of concern, many have commented: "This site is kind of chaotic. It has something here

… and then … something there." Well, this is quite normal. Is there any construction site in

the world which does not resemble that, practically speaking? Is real life not oftentimes filled

with adjustments and re-adjustments? After all, this is a novel theological project. Praise

God! (Date: October 25, 2001)

For our convenience, volume 29 (i.e., Familization: An Ontology of Chis) is now volume 7.

Thank you. (Date: November 11, 2001)

Starting from May 2, 2002, the author will resume doing Stage D of Vol. 7. It may take half

a year or more to do so. (Date: April 19, 2002)
