Radiation of the Holy Eucharist

John Cheng*

Everything radiates. Everything (created or uncreated, visible or invisible) radiates some kind of power or energy, be it created or uncreated, visible or invisible. For example, a physical mass radiates physical energy. A human being radiates human energy. Whenever you are joyful, you radiate joyful energy; sad, sad energy; holy, holy energy; unholy, unholy energy; etc. Whenever you pray for people, you, being a temple and channel of the Holy Spirit, radiate the healing power or energy of the Spirit unto them. On the one hand, a holy angel indeed radiates holy angelic energy: "I saw another angel coming down from heaven… and the earth was made bright with his splendour." (Rev 18:1). On the other, a spirit of darkness radiates diabolic darkness, power or energy: "The whole world is in the power of the evil one." (1Jn 5:19) As God the Eternal Light eternally radiates divine uncreated light, power or energy to all, what can we say then about the Holy Eucharist?

The Holy Eucharist Ceaselessly Radiates Boundless Eucharistic Grace, Life or Energy to All Creation The Holy Eucharist is the Infinite Source of God's grace to us on earth. Vatican II solemnly teaches: "From the [divine] liturgy, especially from the Eucharist, grace comes flowing to us as if from a fountain." (Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, no.10) Bl. Sr. Faustina witnessed: "I saw the two rays coming out from the Host." (Diary 344) "When the priest took the Blessed Sacrament to bless the people, I saw the Lord Jesus.. The Lord gave His blessing, and the rays extended over the whole world." (Diary 420)

The Sacred Host Radiates Christ's Presence to Us While He was on earth, Christ promised us: "I am with you always, to the close of the age." (Mt 28:20) This is how Jesus has fulfilled His promise -- the real Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ are truly present in the Sacred Host, radiating unceasingly to us without limit His Blood and Water (which represent His Divinity and Humanity) through the two rays (Diary 299). As all authority in Heaven and on earth is given to Him (cf. Mt 28:16), the Resurrected Christ, living both in Heaven and in the Holy Eucharist, is present to all creation now through his universal radiance. St. Benedict of Nursia saw the whole universe as if it had been gathered into a beam of the divine light (cf. P.G., LXVI, 198-200).

The Holy Eucharist Radiates Grace or Divine Energy to the Whole Church Sr. Faustina: "I saw the same rays issuing from the monstrance and spreading throughout the Church. I asked Jesus that He deign to light the fire of His love in all souls that were cold. Beneath these rays a heart will grow warm even if were like a block of ice; even if it were as hard as a rock, it will crumble into dust." (Diary 370) Apparently [to the glory of the Father and through the power of the Holy Spirit], any renewal of the Church, concerning any individual, family, parish and community (both lay and religious) should begin, continue and experience their ultimate reality and meaning in, through and for the Eucharistic Christ.

The Holy Host Radiates Christ's Redeeming Rays of Mercy to All The Eucharistic rays have become the infinite, unshakable foundation and transformation of all creation. Christ told Sr. Faustina, "These rays shield souls from the wrath of My Father. Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him." (Diary 299) Christ not only died and resurrected for all, but continues to radiate His boundless Divinity and Humanity to us all in the Holy Eucharist. Upon this unfathomed sacrifice of love the Father and the Holy Spirit continue to work to redeem and transform us all.

The Holy Eucharist Radiates Heaven and an Infinite Number of Other Blessings to Us All This is how Sr. Faustina praises the Divine Mercy flowing out from the Holy Eucharist: "Let the doubting souls read these considerations on Divine Mercy and become trusting. Divine Mercy, gushing forth from the bosom of the Father… greatest attribute of God… incomprehensible mystery… unfathomed in the mysteries of God… fountain gushing forth from the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity… unfathomed by any intellect, human or angelic… better than the heavens… astonishment of Angels, incomprehensible to Saints… descending to earth in the Person of the Incarnate Word… unfathomed in the institution of the Sacred Host… which flowed out from the open wound of the Heart of Jesus… source of miracles and wonders… enclosed in the Heart of Jesus for us, and especially at the hour of death… endowing us with immortal life… encompassing the whole universe… source of our happiness and joy… embracing all the works of His hands… crown of all of God's handiwork… only hope of despairing souls… repose of hearts, peace amidst fear… delight and ecstasy of holy souls… accompanying us every moment of our life… shielding us from the fire of hell… sweet relief for anguished hearts… lifting us out of every misery… in which we are all immersed… inspiring hope against all hope - I trust in You." (Diary 949)

Bathing and Tapping into the Eucharistic Radiance for Ourselves and Others Jesus said to Sr. Faustina: "I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them with itself, but radiates them to other souls." (Diary 1074) Besides, following the shining example of Sr. Faustina, we should learn how to persevere in daily prayers (cf. Diary 195). Above all, if we take her message seriously, we should learn how to spend long hours before the Holy Eucharist (cf. Diary 268), at least once in a while.
