WORSHIP BRIEFS

Occasionally, the question arises about proper attire while attending Mass, specifically during the warmer months of the year.  First, and most important, attending Mass is better than not attending Mass.  Clothing is secondary.  However, one should make a reasonable attempt to dress modestly and in such a way so as not to distract fellow parishioners.  Shorts seem appropriate enough in this climate; cool tops seem appropriate as well.  Tops and bottoms (yes, both are required!) should be modest and not designed to reveal the wearer in a lewd way.  In other words, undies should not be visible, nor should navels.  Also, clothing in Church should not be a billboard for distracting messages, such as:  beer brands, music bands, political positions, suggestive language, etc. In short (ahem), keep cool!  No one needs to sweat it out at Church.  Just give a little thought to what kind of cool wear is appropriate for Church.  Thanks. ~Fr. Peter

CURSILLO – National Conference—Join with us as we continue the study of the best news – which is that God loves us – spread by the best means – genuine friendship with God, self and others. Meet Cursillistas from across Canada! Attend the National Cursillo Conference June 26-29 at UBC-O in Kelowna. The theme is “Witnesses of the Good News – The Precursillo.” Registration fee of $195 includes all meals. Register by June 1. For more information and a registration form visit: www.cursillo-canada.org. If you are unable to attend the conference, you are welcome to attend Ultreya on June 27 at 7:30pm and/or Fiesta on June 28 at 8pm. A nominal charge will apply. Volunteers are needed for hosting, registration, transportation and more. If you are able to help, contact Les Symes at 250-762-8751 or lessymes@shaw.ca.

PLEASE PRAY for those who are ill at home or in the hospital, in particular: Helen Beauregard, Erika Bernauer, Lawrence Bouvette, Glenn Bowden, Meaghan Clarke, Catherine Closs, Elsie Farrar, Catherine Fortunat, Doug, Alice and Christopher Fralick, Claude Gauthier, Vince & Anna Kolodychuk, Olivia Motton, Syl Paquin, Helen Parr, Martha Perra, Manda Petrus, Thomas Reis, Frank Ritz, Lucy Sadler, Barbara Schnell, Vera Schraeder, Olivia Sweeney, Philip Tilley, Michele Turanec, Bertha Wenhert, Mary Wildemann, and Jeanne Young.

REQUESTING MASSES: Please understand that a Mass intention may not be able to be fulfilled on a particular date (due to funerals, other Church events, priest is away, etc.). A nearby date will be found. Masses that are requested throughout the year more-or-less wait to be offered in the order received. Because more than six Mass requests are received each week, it is necessary to send many Mass requests to missions and smaller parishes in the diocese for a more timely offering of the Mass. Parishioners are welcome to request any number of Masses, understanding that the Masses intention may have to be offered in another location

YOUTH DAY AND YEAR OF ST. PAUL

Vatican Releases May-August Schedule

VATICAN CITY, APRIL 30, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has several engagements planned for the upcoming months, most notably the journey to Australia for World Youth Day and the opening of the Pauline Jubilee Year.

The Vatican published today the Pope's schedule for May through August.

This Saturday, the Pope will recite the rosary in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

On the feast of Pentecost, May 11, he will preside at  the 10 a.m. Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.

May 17-18, the Holy Father will make a pastoral visit to Savona and Genoa, Italy.

And on the feast of Corpus Christi, Thursday, May 22, he will preside over Mass at 7 p.m. in St. John Lateran and then process with the Blessed Sacrament to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

In June, the Pontiff has another two-day pastoral visit scheduled. June 14-15, he will go to Santa Maria di Leuca and Brindisi, Italy.

June 28 will be the solemn opening of the Pauline Jubilee Year. The Pope will preside with first vespers in St. Paul's Outside the Walls.

Then, on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29, he will preside over a 9:30 a.m. Mass, which will include the imposition of the pallium on new metropolitan archbishops.

July will be marked by World Youth Day in Sydney. Benedict XVI departs for Australia on July 12 and returns July 21.

Finally, on Aug. 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, the Pope will preside over 8 a.m. Mass at the parish church of St. Thomas of Villanova in Castel Gandolfo.

MOTHERS

A most important person is a Mother. She cannot claim the honour of having built Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Parliament Buildings, or the SkyDome. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any edifice - a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. Even the angels have not been blessed with such a grace. A Mother shares in God’s creative miracle to bring new Saints to heaven. God joins with Fathers and Mothers in this great act of creation. What glory there is in the vocation to be a Mother!

Happy Mother’s Day!

MILESTONES AND ANNIVERSARIES

Today is the 132nd day of 2008 with 234 to go this year.

Events

1189 - Emperor Frederik I Barbarossa & 100,000 crusaders depart Regensburg

1330 - Constantinople (Istanbul) becomes new capital by Roman Emperor Constantine for Eastern Roman Empire

1621 - Death of Johann Arndt, 65, German Lutheran theologian. Called the precursor of Pietism, Arndt was the greatest name in the history of German mysticism after Thomas a Kempis.

1812 - Waltz introduced into English ballrooms - Most observers consider it disgusting & immoral!

1816 - The American Bible Society was formed in New York City.

1824 St. Regis Seminary was opened in Florissant, Missouri. It was the first Roman Catholic institution established in America for the higher education of American Indians.

1833 - "Lady-of-the-Lake" strikes iceberg & sinks in N Atlantic; kills 215

1858 - Minnesota entered the United States of America this day as the Union's 32nd state. Although its state bird is the common loon, there's nothing common about Minnesota, whose Dakota-Sioux Indian name means sky-tinted water. The North Star State's capital is St. Paul, which has a twin city, Minneapolis. The state flower is the lovely lady's slipper.

1900 - In an effort to regain the heavyweight boxing title, James J. Corbett, known as Gentleman Jim, was knocked out cold by James J. Jeffries -- in the 23rd round. Maybe if he'd stopped at, say, 12 rounds...

The show was such a hit after five weeks on the air that it debuted on the Mutual Broadcasting System coast to coast. Maybe Barry became a bit too familiar in 1959. It was "Twenty One", the enormously popular show that Barry hosted, that led to the Quiz Show Scandal that rocked television and the U.S. Congress.

1946 - B.F. Goodrich of Akron, Ohio,  announced the development of the tubeless tire. If you guessed that Mr. Goodrich was from Akron, OH, you win the T-shirt.

1981 - Andrew Lloyd Webber/TS Eliot's musical "Cats" premieres in London

1984 - The Detroit Tigers defeated the California Angels 8-2 and set a major-league record for victories at the beginning of a baseball season. The Tigers, under Sparky Anderson, won 26 of their first 30 games.

1985 - 40 die & 150 injured in fire at Bradford City football ground.

1985 - Pope John Paul II arrives at Welschap Airport in Eindhoven,  Netherlands, to begin his 10 day visit to the BeNeLux nations.  Upon arrival, the pope traveled to St. John's Cathedral in 'S-Hertogenbosch, where he celebrated Mass.
