The Chrism Mass is one of the most solemn and significant liturgies of the Church. It is celebrated once a year on the morning of Holy Thursday and is well-attended by parishioners hailing from all the parishes in the Vicariate of Kuwait. The celebration at the Cathedral marks the solemn annual renewal of priestly commitment and the blessing of the holy oils that are dispensed to the parishes to be used throughout the year.
The three holy oils that are blessed during this Mass are -
the oil of the catechumens, the oil of the sick and the chrism.
Chrism which is a mixture of oil of olives and balsam - has been introduced
into the functions of the church liturgy, owing to its symbolic significance.
Olive oil, being rich and abiding, is fitted to represent the outpouring of
sacramental grace, while balsam, which gives forth a fragrant odour,
typifies the innate sweetness of Christian virtue.
Lastly, he prepared, consecrated and blessed the chrism, which is used
to anoint the newly baptized, seal candidates for confirmation and
anoint the hands of priests at ordination. Chrism is also used to anoint and
dedicate new churches and altars.
RENEWAL OF PRIESTLY COMMITMENT: The annual Chrism Mass also acknowledges the ministry of the
priesthood instituted by Christ.
It is only fitting therefore, that on this occasion (Mass of Chrism),
the Church invites her priests to renew their commitment to priestly life
and ministry they made when they were anointed in the sacrament of Holy Orders.
In addition to the renewal of priestly service, the deacons, religious and
laity present also express their commitment of service to the Church.
THE CONCELEBRATION AT THIS CHRISM MASS reflects the bond between the Bishop and priests and is a powerful illustration of the saving grace of God which flows from the Bishop (as successor of the apostles) through the priests to the faithful. During the Mass, the concelebrants renewed
their commitment to the priesthood, by answering questions (together and out loud)
which the Bishop put to them. In the homily, Bishop Micallef recalled the
HOLY FATHER'S MESSAGE addressed to priests, in his annual letter to them.
THE JOYFUL CELEBRANTS: Following the Chrism Mass, Bishop Micallef gathered around him, his faithful priests and deacon along with the other priests visiting the vicariate during the Holy Week, the Eucharist minister and altar servers, for a memorable photograph.
