01 SEPT 2001 - PRESS RELEASE FROM THE NUNCIO'S OFFICE
Episcopal Ordination / Vatican Appoints Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait ..
On June 28th 2001, His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed Monsignor
Giuseppe De Andrea as Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait, Yemen and Bahrain,
and Apostolic Delegate for the Arabian Peninsula, raising him at the
same time to the episcopacy as Titular Archbishop of Anzio.
Archbishop-designate De Andrea, until now Chargé d'Affaires of the
Apostolic Nunciature to Kuwait, Yemen and Bahrain, and of the
Apostolic Delegation for the Arabian Peninsula, is now raised to the
rank of Apostolic Nuncio (i.e. Ambassador) of His Holiness Pope John
Paul II to the Countries of Kuwait, Yemen and Bahrain, and of
Apostolic Delegate of His Holiness for the church in the Countries of
the Arabian Peninsula which do not have diplomatic relations with the
Holy See (Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia).
His Eminence Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Secretary of State of His
Holiness Pope John Paul II, will ordain archbishop-designate De
Andrea to the episcopacy in the Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Peter
in the Vatican on Thursday 20 September 2001 at 5:00 p.m.
After the episcopal ordination, Archbishop De Andrea will officially
present his credential letters as Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary to His Highness the Emir of the State of Kuwait, to
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Yemen and to His
Highness the Emir of the State of Bahrain.
Every bishop in the Catholic Church carries the title of the diocese
to which he is assigned. A bishop, however, who is not charged with
the governance of an established diocese, such as Apostolic Vicars
and Apostolic Nuncios, receive the title of an ancient diocese that
in the course of centuries has ceased to exist. Such is the case of
Anzio, in central Italy, presently incorporated in the territory of
another diocese and whose title has now been assigned to Archbishop
De Andrea.
