Fr. Berchmans was born on January 13, 1965 in Sangarapuram, Dindigul, a District of Tamil Nadu, India.

He joined the Discalced Carmelite Order (OCD) and was ordained at St. Joseph's Church in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu by the Rtd. Rev. Gabriel, Bishop of Trichy on May 14, 1992.

Fr. Berchmans has a B.A. in Philosophy from the Arul Anandar College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu (1985-1988). He did his Bachelor of Theology from the Capuchin Theological College, Trichi, Tamil Nadu (1988-1992). He then did his M.A. in Psychology from the Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu (1993-1995) and Masters in Theology M.Th. from the Jnana Deep Vidyapeeth University, Pune Maharashtra (1996-1998).

Fr. Berchmans has a Certificate in Psychological Counseling from the Capuchin Theological College, Trichy, Tamil Nadu (1989).

Fr. Berchmans served as the Parish Priest at Amala Annai Church, Nanakudi, in the Sivagangai Diocese, Tamil Nadu (1998-2001).

From 2001 to 2005 he was a Formator in the Seminary where he taught Theology and trained aspirants to the priesthood. During this period he was responsible for conducting retreats and seminars for Religious and lay persons and was also giving counseling.

Fr. Berchmans arrived in Kuwait to serve the Vicariate on September 8, 2005.
