Calvary Cemetery - Maple Street, Massena, NY

It's History - In 1914, Fr. Timothy P. Holland undertook the incorporation of Calvary Cemetery which was laid out on Maple Street in 1915. Massena had long outgrown its first cemetery, St. Peter's on Center Street. The present cemetery serves the needs of the Catholic people in the Massena area.

St. Peter's Cemetery.

Significance of Church Burials - The burial of our beloved dead has always been considered in the Church as a religious function - one of the Corporal Works of Mercy. We consider our cemeteries to be in reality reliquaries of the saints. Our obligation is to maintain, with fitting dignity, the remains of our loved ones as they await the hour of their resurrection.

Catholic cemeteries are monuments to eternity. They speak their special message of Christian belief in the abundance of eternal life to a world that at times seeks fullness of life within the passing realities of space and time. Catholic cemeteries proclaim the sublime mysteries of faith in a personal God, of hope in the resurrection and of the glorious reunion of the members of Christ's Mystical Body. As such, Catholic cemeteries are a consolation to the bereaved and an inspiration to the living.
