One of the two sons of Zebedee. Brother to St. James the Greater, who were together fishing partners with Peter and Andrew. These were the first four called to be apostles.
With his brother, asked to be at Jesus' side in the kingdom, causing an argument among the apostles.
The only apostle who stayed with Jesus through his cross and death. Given by Jesus from the cross to Mary. First apostle to reach the tomb after the women reported it empty.
The only Apostle who was not martyred. Died at a very old age.
Credited as the author of the Gospel according to John and three letters in the Bible, and most likely the Book of Revelation.

Along with Peter and James, the only three apostles to witness the Transfiguration and the healing of Jairus' daughter, the only three to accompany Jesus while he prayed in Gethsemane before his arrest.
