THE
PASTOR’S COLUMN
Included in the bulletin this week is a
letter from our Cardinal Archbishop concerning the realignment of parochial
institutions throughout his jurisdiction. When I was thinking about this week’s
column about our 2007 Cardinal’s Appeal some of his words resonated with me and
serve as a wonderful introduction: “While we are bringing the current
(my emphasis not his) realignment process to a conclusion, be assured that in
collaboration with the People of God of the Archdiocese of New York, we will
continue to review the needs of all our people so that our parishes, schools,
and charitable agencies might render the very best of service to our
Archdiocese community of faith.”
Each year at this time this fundraising
campaign is run to support the diverse programs of the mission of the Church in
areas of pastoral concern, educational progress, and charitable work. No matter
what the religious, political, or economic climate is their expenses continue
and, in not a few cases, increase. Last year, because we were conducting the
Bi-Centennial Campaign, the goal amount of the annual appeal was collapsed into
that effort. Beginning this week, we will commence the traditional outreach to
support the operating needs of the archdiocese as the final wave of parishes
work to support their capital needs as well as those of the archdiocese.
I believe that before I address our present
appeal, it would be timely to report to you concerning the progress of our
plans as well as the reception of the funds which have been received and
pledged. In terms of the latter, the procedures in place call for a deposit
made to our account. The money in that particular fund is restricted to our
capital projects. At the present time, discussions are focusing on the
technology package in the school as well as the renovations to the Church.
Consultations have taken place with several parishioners concerning both and I will
continue seeking input from different individuals and parish groups. When
available, drawings will be made available for comment.
I now return to the words of our shepherd
as I seek your generous response to this year’s appeal. The Cardinal stated and
he has caused to take place an examination of each of the agencies benefiting
from your largess to ensure that your gift is being utilized to its greatest
effect. For instance, he asked that those services which have children as their
focus become more coordinated. The numbers of structures which were so involved
were reduced and procedures simplified so that children might be adopted,
placed in safe foster homes, and receive appropriate health care.
Though I will be speaking at each of the
Masses this weekend, I think it necessary to share with you a fuller expression
of the nature of the needs addressed by the Cardinal’s Appeal. Father Joseph
and I when we visited our friend, Msgr. Boyd, in the hospital, stopped by the
nursing home at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Living there for quite a while has been
my first grade teacher. This religious woman has given more than fifty years of
her life to Church ministry. As she has served the Lord faithfully so now as a
faith community we are challenged to care for her and so many others. The first
priority of our annual appeal is the care of the religious who taught in our
schools, nursed in our health care facilities, and comforted the deprived. All
of us can recall when perhaps we required a special word of encouragement, or
feared the void the impending death of a relative might cause in our existence,
or faced eviction from housing and sister or brother eased our concerns and
didn’t rest until our problems had solutions. All of us must not leave wanting
those who satisfied our wants.
Throughout our educational system, our
young people require services that support their human development and faith
formation. The ADAAP program counsels students and their parents as they
encounter various difficulties. They work with schools as they experience
crises such as the death of a child or staff member. As youngsters mature in
their knowledge of their religion, they need to be assisted by professionals
and volunteers who themselves are on a spiritual journey. The archdiocese
through various efforts aids in this process. Additionally, it ensures that
teachers are certified in the areas and levels in which they instruct. For
decades, our parochial schools and our religious education programs have
benefited from the use of ITV. These facilities have enabled archdiocesan
institutions to receive programming which incarnates many lessons that are
being taught and opens opportunities for learning that might be otherwise unavailable.
Because of the historic nature of
immigration in New York, every generation has been asked to give a hand to the
next. Catholic Charities finds itself responding to their many needs. It has
expanded its language services, employment offerings, and housing efforts. Many
of the newest residents in our area are from Latin American countries and
therefore, our co-religionists. Many times, the Church must respond, as well,
to the young women who have chosen life and see their children born. We must
aid those agencies which provide for their pre-natal examinations, safe
housing, as well as the necessary components of training and counseling which
will give then a better future. For the Appeal, the other end of the spectrum
is just as significant. Our seniors, who have been the strongest supporters of
society, deserve good care and companionship. As they live on their own, they
require transportation: the means to visit doctors, shop for their necessities,
and enjoy social opportunities. When they become unable to be independent, they
should be consoled with the reality that there are places where their human
dignity is recognized and their faith is strengthened. As we baby boomers age
and retire, the assurances that we will not be forgotten is important.
The Archdiocesan Pastoral Services cover
many areas: the on-going formation of clergy and religious; the support of
parishes that are required to provide spiritual sustenance but cannot be
financially viable; and the office of the Metropolitan Tribunal which examines
marriages that have faltered and seeks to reconcile their participants so that
they might be able to participate fully in the life of the Church.
I realize that many of you are very much
involved in the redemption of your pledges to our capital campaign. I realize
that some might not be able to assist us at this time. But I must ask everyone
to be sacrificial in their outlooks. The needs of the people of our Archdiocese
require this. For all that you have done and are doing, they and I, are most
grateful.
May God bring success to the work of our
hands.
Jesus vivat
Fr. Brian
