MANY
THANKS!!!
On behalf of the
Mamaroneck Child Development Center and Mamaroneck Community Action Program, we
would like to thank the congregation for their continued dedication and support
of our programs. Without your concern and generosity, we would not be able to
meet the needs of our children, families, and community.
The families were
extremely appreciative of the food baskets, which certainly brightened their
Easter. The children were particularly thrilled with all of the “goodies” that
were included in the baskets.
Sincerely,
Denise Gilman,
Director, Mamaroneck Child Development Center

THE PASTOR’S COLUMN
As I mentioned in my homily on Holy Thursday at the Mass of the
Lord’s Supper, His Holiness Benedict XVI has issued an apostolic exhortation
which reflects his response to the Synod of Bishops which met at the conclusion
of the year of the Eucharist declared by his predecessor. Though it would be
most beneficial to read the whole document, I would like to take this opportunity
to emphasize certain elements of its teaching. “The Eucharist is a ‘mystery of
faith’ par excellence: ’the sum and summary of our faith! The church’s faith is
essentially a Eucharistic faith, and it is especially nourished at the table of
the Eucharist…the sacrament of the altar is always at the heart of the church’s
life: ‘Thanks to the Eucharist, the church is reborn ever anew!’ The livelier
the Eucharistic faith of the people of God, the deeper is its sharing in
ecclesial life in steadfast commitment to the mission entrusted by Christ to
his disciples.” (6) We must be
concerned in view of this truth that over recent decades we have seen
decreasing members participating in the Sunday liturgy. Polls have told us that
many Catholics have lost their way and no longer acknowledge the Real Presence
in the elements of bread and wine.
In this theological treatise, the Pope goes on to link the Eucharist
with each of the sacraments. “It must never be forgotten that our reception of
baptism and confirmation is ordered to the Eucharist.” (17) He revives the
intrinsic relationship between the sacramental reality of the altar and the
words of divine forgiveness.” Given the connection between these sacraments an
authentic catechesis on the meaning of the Eucharist must include the call to
pursue the path of penance…We know that the faithful are surrounded by a
culture that overlooks the need to be in a state of grace in order to approach
sacramental communion worthily.” (20) Decades ago, there was a
misinterpretation of Church teaching. It was commonly thought when one wished
to receive communion one had to have been to confession no matter what their
spiritual condition. This accounted for the fact that less than 30% of the
congregants would receive the sacrament at a particular liturgy. While one can
applaud the increase in understanding of “active participation” in the Eucharist
as to include sacramental reception, one must acknowledge the papal insight. To
deliberately miss Sunday celebration is a serious matter and yet during recent
days commemorating the Paschal Mystery many did not hesitate to receive
Communion though they had not presented themselves for auricular confession as
the church requires. Benedict XVI brings to mind another pastoral situation”…I
would like to call attention to a pastoral problem frequently encountered
nowadays. I am referring to the fact that on certain occasions --- for example,
wedding Masses, funerals and the like – in addition to practicing Catholics,
there may be others present who have long since ceased to attend Mass and are
living in a situation which does not permit them to receive the sacraments…
[T]here is a need to find a brief and clear way to remind those present on the
meaning of sacramental Communion and the conditions required for its
reception.” (50) In terms of those who find themselves in relationships which
are lacking ecclesial validity, may I offer once again my support in helping to
bring about a regularized circumstance.
It has been a grave concern to Catholic clergy that those who
are ill and cannot be a part of the Eucharistic liturgy should be given the
opportunity to receive the Lord from them or a minister. This is particularly
true of those in a terminal situation. As the Holy Father writes: “Jesus did
not only send his disciples forth to heal the sick… he also instituted a
specific sacrament for them: the anointing of the sick. The Letter of James
attests to the presence of this sacramental sign in the early Christian
community… If the Eucharist shows how Christ’s sufferings and death have been
transformed into love, the anointing of the sick, for its part, unites the sick
with Christ’s self-offering for the salvation of all so that they too, within
the mystery of the communion of saints, can participate in the redemption of
the world. The relationship between these two sacraments becomes clear in
situations of serious illness: ‘In addition to the anointing of the sick, the
church offers those who are about to leave this life, the Eucharist as
viaticum.’ On their journey to the Father, communion in the body and blood of
Christ appears as the seed of eternal life and the power of resurrection… Since
viaticum gives the sick a glimpse of the fullness of the paschal mystery, its
administration should be readily provided for. Attentive pastoral care shown to
those who are ill brings great spiritual benefit to the entire community since
whatever we do to one of the least of our brothers and sisters we do to Jesus
himself… (22) With this papal admonition in mind, may I renew the request to
inform the parish of anyone who needs our sacramental assistance. It should be
noted that because of privacy laws, clergy cannot visit hospital beds unless
being called by the patient or a family member. Please don’t hesitate to call.
The connection between the sacrament of Holy orders and the
Eucharist is obvious. “The church teaches that priestly ordination is the
indispensable condition for the valid celebration of the Eucharist. Indeed,
‘the ecclesial service of the ordained minister, it is Christ himself who is
present to his church as head of his body, shepherd of his flock, high priest
of the redemptive sacrifice’… As a result, priests should be conscious of the
fact that in their ministry, they must never put themselves or their personal
opinions in first place, but Jesus Christ. Any attempt to make themselves the
center of the liturgical action contradicts their very identity as priests. The
priest is above all a servant of others, and he must continually work at being
a sign pointing to Christ, a docile instrument in the Lord’s hands.” (23) With
his in mind, the Holy Father broached the dearth of religious and priestly
vocations. “The pastoral care of vocations needs to involve the entire
Christian community in every area of its life. Obviously, this pastoral work on
all levels also includes exploring the matter with families…” (25) We must
encourage our young people to recognize God’s call to ministry. In their hands
is the future of the Church.
Next we will continue our exposition of this document.

Fr. Brian
