the MOST HOLY BODY and BLOOD of CHRIST
JUNE 10,
2007
Jesus
said, “This is My Body given up for you…This is My Blood shed for you for the
forgiveness of sins.” The Church needs priests who will allow their lives to be
squeezed out like a lemon for the salvation of the world. If you are a young
man interested in the priesthood, please contact Father Luke Sweeney or Father
Luis Saldana at the Vocation Office in the archdiocese of New York at 968-1340
or www.archvocations.org.

THE
PASTOR’S COLUMN
The feast of Corpus Christi on which we
celebrate the Eucharist as the “source and summit” of our faith is a most
appropriate time for us to write about the intended improvements in our church
building and school structure. Over the years both have been renovated to meet
the growing needs of the people as well as the institutional changes in liturgy
as well as education. As the homes of each of us call for redecorating from
time to time and advantage is taken of modern technology, so our center for
worship is due for a useful beautification.
When the Bi-Centennial Campaign was
introduced, many consultations took place as to what priorities should be
established. Parish organizations and several individuals made many suggestions
which were initially published in the fundraising effort and now accepted by
the appropriate archdiocesan departments and the Cardinal Archbishop.
Of great concern to all is the necessity
that each part of our church be accessible to all, especially the sanctuary. It
is of great importance that every parishioner who desires to serve in
liturgical ministry is not hampered by architectural restrictions. A
centerpiece of planning for the altar area is a ramp which will permit entry
into the sacristy and ultimately, the sanctuary. It should be noted that both
the priests’ and working sacristies have not been updated for a very long
period. The cinderblock covered in the main body of the church in a past
renovation was not in either room. The furniture must be replaced in some cases
due to the fact the much of the wood is dried out and split.
The most recent edition of the General
Instruction of the Roman Missal and the Holy Father’s post synodal
exhortation:
Sacramentum
Caritatas stresses the placement of
the tabernacle. While neither does demand that it be in the center of the
Church, we should remember that our predecessors built a beautiful home for us
with that reality in mind. By restoring the Real Presence to its traditional
place, we are complying not only with their original intent as well as the present
mind of the Church. The area vacated by this movement will become a shrine
dedicated to Saints John and Paul. (As most of you are aware, the only images
of the Roman brothers are on the wall hanging in the back of the Church.
Someone thought the statues at the entrance were they. They mistook them for
Saints Joseph and Anthony.) The Blessed Mother Shrine will be enhanced in its
present location.
The surface of the sanctuary area will be
white marble decorated with four Jerusalem crosses reminding us that the first
altar in which Christ served His Apostles, that the place in which He offered
Himself to the Father, and that the Upper Room from which the church burst
forth under the guidance of the Holy Spirit was that Holy City. The altar,
ambo, and shrines will be new. With beautiful wood foundations, they will be
capped with onyx: a material befitting the sacred character of their use. Our
beautiful stained glass windows and Stations of the Cross will be cleaned,
repaired where necessary, and possibly receive wooden framing. The crucifix now
hung in the back of the Church will be restored to the area above the
tabernacle. The image of the Risen Lord will continue to be feature elsewhere.
Of greatest concern to many of our
parishioners is the need for significant changes in the lighting system. In
addition to overhead chandeliers which will cause greater dispersion, further
installations will be included on the sides. Finally, the wood ceiling will be
lightened by sanding as well as indirect lighting. How appropriate it was for
our predecessors to choose cedars of Lebanon to enclose our Church. Due to the
development of the rest room in the Church which will be constructed to ADA
standards, the Sacred Heart Shrine will be moved and the Room of Reconciliation
will take its place. In the back of the Church, there are some drawings which
give perhaps some visual reality to what I have addressed.
At the same time in which these changes are
being made, the school will be undergoing its updating. To recall for everyone,
we are looking forward to the installation of a new library and media center
with an enlarged computer lab. The explosion of knowledge is a challenge both
to faculty and students. It is hoped that by the introduction of this facility
will advance the educational project. Recent research has warned that academia
should not abandon traditional means of learning. Therefore a substantial
library is envisioned. To research any issue fully requires more than the web
address for google. So that the children can expand their horizons of knowledge
in all areas, software has been secured that visualization might take place in
achieving historical perspective and scientific advancement. I must admit to a
pang of envy when I view some of the materials that will be available to our
teachers as they instruct their classes. One can watch as FDR asks for a
declaration of war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. One relives the excitement
of man’s first step on the Moon. One is enriched as life forms change before
one’s eyes. Since all teachers will have their own laptops, their lesson plans
will be able to embrace many diverse sources of information. Each classroom
will be wired and equipped with smart boards. Other improvements are being contemplated
as funds become available.
I am grateful for the advice of many
parishioners, especially members of the Finance Council. Our Archdiocesan
Building Commission and Chancery personnel have been extraordinary in their
support.
We hope the work contemplated will commence
after June 26th. Mass will be celebrated in the auditorium this
summer since it is air conditioned. May God watch over our parish family and
all its endeavors especially our church and school projects.
Jesus Vivat,
Fr. Brian
