THE PASTOR’S COLUMN

In the ancient days before cablevision, before HDTV, even before color television, there was a wonderful program called You Are There. Its premise was that historical events were being reported as they were occurring by a series of newsmen with Walter Cronkite as anchor. For instance, one episode dealt with the assassination of Julius Caesar. The ancient Roman Senate was pictured as gathering. In togas, each of its members is conferring with each other as questions are asked by an unseen interviewer. Not unlike the present day various views are espoused by leaders of the groups who are either enamored with the conquerors of Gaul or who out of fear or anger see him as a danger to the republic. Brutus, Mark Anthony, and Cassius among others respond to the inquireries of CBS personages such as Richard C. Hottelet, Mike Wallace, and John Daly. The series also covered the debates over the Declaration of Independence, the death of Abraham Lincoln, and the pursuit of John Wilkes Booth, and the French Revolution. (One of the great gifts, I just received from a friend was a complete DVD set of the series.) Curiosity leads me to consider how this show would have recreated the feast we celebrate this week. Let’s use our imagination.

News Bulletin! “We have received a report of a possible extraordinary ending of the life of an extraordinary woman. Andrea Mitchell reports from Jerusalem.”

“Born in a backwater town of typical Jewish parents, Mary, the wife of the carpenter Joseph and mother to Jesus, the executed founder of a sect which think of him as the promised Messiah, has passed beyond the sight of many of her son’s disciples who had been on a death watch for some time. I have, Walter, paraphrased this moment in such a way because Mary’s finality is wrapped in as much mystery as her only child’s. Recall, Walter, that after the Romans had tried him and ordered him to be crucified, his grave was found three days later: empty. Conflicting accounts blamed grave robbers while others told of countless appearances in this city and in the area of Galilee. For her part, the woman addressed as ‘Blessed Mother’ by her closest associates, seems to have “disappeared” not unlike the one proclaimed as ‘the Christ’ by the growing community which bears his name. To grasp the significance of this moment perhaps we should return to the place where it all began. Rolland Smith is in Nazareth.”

“Nothing about this woman’s life could be deemed as average. We are here in the town where many distant relatives still live. She is revered here. Outside her childhood home on its modest stonewall is the graffiti announcement: ’the house of Holy Mary.’ Let us speak to one of the older residents of this locale. Did you ever meet the daughter of Joachim and Ann?”

“As a child I remember my parents talking about this devoted young girl. They spoke of seeing her being most attentive to the wishes of her parents. Two things puzzled them however. They did not understand why she became betrothed to such an older man as Joseph. So many eligible men were beseeching her father for her hand. But even more mysteriously, she became pregnant before attending her husband in his home. My mother, though, never spoke against her. Knowing Mary then, she would say, one always would want to think that somehow God’s purposes were being fulfilled. History bore her out. Unfortunately, my most graphic memory is one which recalls the Passover in which her son lost his life. She never left his side. Though his closest associates had abandoned him, one even bring the principal betrayer, and all those he cured were no where to be seen, she remained. To me, Mary showed herself to be what she called herself so many times: ‘I am the maidservant of the Lord.’ Thank you. Back to you, Walter.”

“We now return to Jerusalem for a press conference conducted by two of the closest people to Mary. Both have written published accounts of the life of Jesus. Luke’s benefited from the personal testimony of his mother. John, frequently called the Beloved Disciples, wrote for a wider audience of gentiles and presented “the light of the world” in terms of philosophy and theology prominent in Asia   Minor and other parts of the know world.”

“My name is Luke. Representing all of the disciples of Jesus and friends of Mary is my brother, John. First of all, we both wish to thank all who join us in our sorrow over the loss we have experienced. Our faith, however, tells us that she has gone where we hope to follow. I would like to tell you, as a physician from what and when she died. But her physical presence ceased to be with us before I could make an official declaration. Though she was always revered by each of us, Mary always deferred first to her son and then to the guardians of his community as well as the preachers of his gospel. I felt it a unique privilege to receive from her the story of the Master’s earliest days. The compassion she displayed for her cousin at the same time that she was pregnant was a characteristic of her entire existence. She exhibited it especially toward the apostle who was to care for her so lovingly as he was mandated by the Lord himself in his final moments on the cross. He will now address you.”

“Again and again the Christ called to us to ‘love one another as he loved us.’ Mary was the perfect exemplification of this command. She never held vindictive feelings against those who failed her son or even those who killed him. As we traveled together to the various faith communities, she would always make time for people who wanted to hear from her about her son’s life and mission. When she settled in Ephesus, Mary would have a daily gathering of children with whom she played, danced and told stories. She touched so many. When she realized the end was near, there was no question in her mind where she should be. The Church of Jerusalem joyfully greeted her and saw to her welfare. Though she has departed, she will always be our mother and advocate. For that we give thanks.”

May the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to guide us and in her Son’s time, may she welcome us to heaven.

.

Jesus vivat,

Fr. Brian
