THE
PASTOR’S COLUMN
The days of summer are
waning as we celebrate Labor Day and prepare for the opening of the schools in
our community. Many parishioners have told me that they enjoyed traveling
throughout our country and around the world. Because of my obligations, I had
the to limit my time away from Saints John and Paul but I was able to attend
the Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus in Nashville, Tennessee. With
my colleague, Msgr. Francis Bellew, we, as associate state chaplains, were part
of the New York State Council delegation. It was truly inspiring to be in the
company of so many members and their wives who have given decades of service to
the church and the order established by Fr. Michael McGivney.
Before the commencement of the official
program, our chaplain, Edward Michael Cardinal Egan, met with us and the state
deputy. He shared with us his gratitude for all the Knights have accomplished
within our jurisdiction. He requested Monsignor and me to collaborate with
archdiocesan and membership officials to form councils which reach out to
Hispanic populations in all areas of the state. Of course, he desires that the
Knights participate in the Bicentennial celebrations taking place this year.
(The vicariate of Central Westchester will come together on April 1, 2008 and
join in a Eucharistic celebration led by His Eminence at Archbishop Stepinac
High School. Keep the date open.) After our private meeting, we escorted the
archbishop to dinner with the New York delegation. On the way, we had the
pleasant privilege of meeting Cardinal O’Malley of Boston. (That encounter
reminded me of a comment a bishop had made at a previous convention: “The
Knights of Columbus is the one organization who can bring this many cardinals
and bishops together outside of Rome.”).
The opening Mass of the convention is
always a breathtaking event. The assemblage of thirteen cardinals, over one
hundred bishops, and an equal number of priests, with twenty five hundred
members of the Columbian family was blessed this year with the presence of
Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, the Holy See’s Secretary of State. (His Eminence is
not only the right hand of the Holy Father but is the Camerlengo of the Church
that is the temporary head of our faith community in the event of a vacancy in
the chair of Saint Peter.) Because of the limited knowledge of English of the
main celebrant, the Mass was said in Latin. (This was a first for me.) A clergy
luncheon followed in which the gathering heard from the director of the new
film, Bella.
The first plenary session received a
greeting from His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. It set the tone for the meetings
to take place. “As Saint Paul wrote in his Second Letter to the Corinthians,
‘The Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we preached among you…was not yes and no;
but in Him it is always Yes’ (2Cor1:19). You have chosen as the theme for your
meeting: ’Celebrating 125 Years of Faith in Action: Witnessing to the “Yes” of
Jesus Christ.’ How important it is to emphasize that the message of the Gospel
is one that answers ‘Yes’ to all the deepest hopes and aspirations of
humanity…For 125 years, the Knights of Columbus have sought to respond to that
‘Yes’ by wholeheartedly accepting the summons to discipleship…This includes the
mission of proclaiming the Gospel, especially by means of catechetical
instruction and by leading to the Church people who are perhaps far removed
from her…It includes service to society through acts of charity, care for the
poor and the sick… It includes the faithful witness of Christian marriage and
family life, whereby the sanctifying presence of the ‘domestic church’
transforms society from within. In all these way, and many more, the Knights of
Columbus have actively built up the Kingdom of God on earth, and I know you
will continue to devote your energies and your apostolic zeal to promoting the
Church’s mission wherever you may be.”
As if to concretize the papal admonition,
the report of the Supreme Knight stated: “Last year, our donations to charity
totaled well over $143 million, an increase of more than $4 million …Equally
impressive was the major increase this year in the amount of time the Knights
devoted to charity, which climbed to an all-time record of more than 68 million
volunteer hours.” Throughout its
history, Carl Anderson reminded his hearers that the Order has supported young
people in the military: “…the total number of prayer books that we have printed
and Catholic chaplains have distributed since 2003 is 400,000…The Fourth Degree
continues to make a substantial contribution at veterans hospitals around the
United States…We have Sir Knights working as volunteers in 90 percent of VA
hospitals. In just one year, their volunteer time totaled more than 83,000
hours. Through the recent troubled times, the Order adopted mottos which
supported the bishops and priest. In its programs, it has supported religious
and priestly vocations. Funds have been expended to produce DVD’s which invite
the Church to contemplate their vocations which rise out of their baptismal
commitment. In terms of church activities, the Supreme Knight stated: “I am
very proud of the thousands of councils and hundreds of thousands of brother
Knights who are leading the renewal of parish life…Our
Pacem in Terris Fund
supports the work of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and since its inception has
provided almost $600,000 to assist what is one of the most important and
delicate missions in the Catholic world…Our Marian pilgrimage this year will
once again be a special occasion for our Order to unit closely with our Holy
Father. This will also be an occasion to remember our brother Knights in Cuba
and of the mission of the Church there.”
At a private dinner for the Board of
Directors of the Knights and attending clergy, Cardinal Bertone paid tribute to
the order. What pride I have as your pastor and the associate chaplain of New
York State in saying that his words are true for the men who are part of our
parish’s council. “How beautiful it is to believe, for to believe is to say
‘Yes’ to Christ; and to say ‘Yes’ to Christ is to bear witness to our faith in
action. My dear Knights of Columbus, may you always remain men firmly committed
to this ‘Yes’ – ‘Yes’ to your families, to your communities – but most
importantly to Christ who is the ‘Yes’ to all our hopes and desires. God bless
you all.”
Jesus vivat,
Fr. Brian
