Today’s Anthem, “The Faith We Sing Was Sown”, a contemporary piece by Michael Connelly, reflects the words of St. James in the 2nd Reading: “What good is it if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? Faith of itself, if it does not have works is dead.”

THE PASTOR’S
COLUMN
With the cooler breezes of fall comes the great increase of activities here at Saints John and Paul. At the nine o’clock Mass, I am commissioning the teachers and staff of our catechetical program. These generous people give their time week after week so the faith is passed on to another generation. They seek to support our parents in their primary obligation to teach their children the principles of living the Catholic faith in all they say and do. Each member of our parish should make it an obligation to pray for these men and women who, acting out their baptismal promises, are instructing the children in the tenets of faith, the ways of worship, the rules of virtue, and the methods of prayer. May we appreciate their sacrifice of time and energy as at times they put aside their own desires in the face of the needs of others. Pray also for the boys and girls who attend classes each week. They face many difficulties in arranging their schedules to be present. But more significantly, they face constantly values in society which are contradicted by those presented in their religious education classes, in their homes, and in our classrooms. May the divine presence guide and strengthen both teachers and students.
Our Knights of Columbus are making their final plans for their second annual golf outing. There is still time to sign up for a wonderful day and evening. After following the little white balls around traps, roughs, and the occasional fairway, a wonderful dinner will follow with good food and fellowship. I remember last year’s dinner. It was most enjoyable to be in such company. The profits from this event benefit the various charitable works of the council. They provide annual scholarships. They provide assistance to the Sisters of Life. They provide support for family activities such as Christmas tree lighting, a parish picnic, and Easter egg hunt. Who knows? A great round might be the result of a little bit of charity. Sign up today. Details are in the bulletin.
The plans for our second Halloweekend are in high gear. Daily our volunteers have been stopping by and talking to the parish staff and working with Father Joseph. I was happy to hear when I was in the hospital that John Tracy Egan, our friend, parishioner, and star of “The Producers” on Broadway was once again going to lead the entertainment at our Cabaret. This is an unbelievable gift. I can’t believe it but it is true. I will have to stuff the Scare Crow costume with hay because of my reduced weight. (Hopefully, the temperature will be just a few degrees more on that Saturday.) As last year the festivities will be kicked off by a dance for our young people and a great movie night for all will be held on Saturday night. Of course, the centerpiece of our great festival is the annual raffle with the prize of a new Lexus or $30,000. The proceeds of this effort contributes greatly to all of the programs which benefit each generation of our parish. Though I cannot participate, the 5K Run will once again be conducted with the cooperation of so many volunteers and the Town of Mamaroneck. All parishioners should have received a letter from me with all the information regarding the Halloweekend Family Festival. I hope you will consider participating in as many of its aspects as possible.
This past week I had an opportunity to meet with our parish trustees. We discussed the various spiritual and material dynamics of our church’s existence. Both men have been parishioners for many years and trusted advisors to me and my predecessors. Jack Coughlin recalls being an usher at the first Mass at the firehouse. Bill Knowles bringing his wide financial experience to bear on budget matters aids me and the financial council in establishing short and long-term plans with commensurate goals. (It might be somewhat informative to devote a few lines to explain the role of parish trustees. Each parish is established as an independent corporation under New York State law. The president of it is the Archbishop of New York. The vice president is the Vicar General. The secretary/treasurer is the pastor. Two lay trustees are appointed by the Archbishop at the behest of the pastor. They are able to serve three one year terms. They are ex-officio members of the Financial Council which is an advisory body to the pastor.) The three of us went over preliminary figures of the last fiscal year. For the most part, it was a positive report. (I would hope to have a detailed report prepared by the First Sunday of Advent for the whole parish published in this bulletin.) The Bicentennial Campaign is coming to a close. Bu October 1st, the trustees hope we will be able to make a final report. The gifts received thus far have put us over our goal. In the months to come, various groups will be called upon to advise me as to the nature and priority of the capital projects we will undertake. (The drawings, that have been already shown, are just the first efforts to elicit comments prior to any authorizations given by the Archdiocese. There will be many consultations before funds are expended.) Because of the advice of our trustees and so many others, our parish is on sound footing with a bright future.
As a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, I am extremely proud to be your pastor. I am looking forward to being with you for many years to come. Though Saints John and Paul always has priority in terms of my time and energy, I must recognize that with the dearth of priests each of us has been asked to fulfill other responsibilities. A few of the parishioners have asked me to address some of the roles I play and explain what I must do and how the particular organization might function. It was announced some time ago that I was named Chancellor of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher. As such, I am a member of the Board of Councilors which meets twice a year. In addition to the Lieutenant of the Eastern Lieutenancy, Mr. Joseph Spinnato (the lay leader of this section of the Order which covers for archdiocese and twenty dioceses) several distinguished members of the laity, Archbishops Mansell of Hartford and Myers of Newark, Rev. Monsignor Robert Stern serve under the Grand Prior: His Eminence Edward M. Cardinal Egan. As Chancellor, I assist the members in the fulfillment of their spiritual obligations. I attempt through various methods to strengthen their relationship with the church particularly in the Holy Land. I am very happy to acknowledge that many people here at Saints John and Paul are members of this Papal Order for many years.
Next week, perhaps, I will be able to discuss some other parts of my ministry.
Have a blessed week.
Jesus vivat,
Fr. Brian
