MASS MUSIC NOTES
We are reminded of the
Responsorial Psalm as the Choir sings the words to “Soli Deo Gloria” by Michael
Praetorius: “Praise the Lord; come praise the Lord. God alone be praised.
Praise the Lord; rejoice and sing. Praise the Lords forevermore.”
If this information
sounds familiar to you, you’re definitely reading the bulletin! We mistakenly submitted
the same:”Music Notes” two weeks in a row. The Anthem last week was “Trust In
The Lord” by G. F. Handel and was inspired by the Gospel story about
tustworthiness.

THE
PASTOR’S COLUMN
Following the thoughts of his predecessor
who had established in the final days of his papacy the Year of the Eucharist,
Pope Benedict XVI has called for “a special Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul
from 28 June 2008 to 29 June 2009 on the occasion of the bimillennium of his
birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and 10 A.D.” In his
homily at Vespers on the eve of the celebration of the Feast of Saints Peter
and Paul at the church which contains the remains of the latter, our Holy
Father shared this reflection: “At the beginning of the Letter to the
Romans…St. Paul greeted the community of Rome, introducing himself as ‘a
servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle’…He used the term ’servant’
…to indicate a relationship of total and unconditional belonging to the Lord
Jesus…Paul knew he was ‘called to be an apostle’, that is that he had not
presented himself as a candidate, nor was his a human appointment, but solely
by a divine call and election. The Apostle to the Gentile repeats several times
in his letters that his whole life is a fruit of God’s freely given and
merciful grace…He was chosen to proclaim ‘the Gospel of God,’…to disseminate the
announcement of divine grace which in Christ reconciles man with God, himself
and others. From his letters, we know that Paul was far from being a good
speaker; on the contrary, he shared with Moses and Jermiah a lack of oratory
skill. ‘His bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account’ (II Cor
10:10), his adversaries said of him. The extraordinary apostolic results that
he was able to achieve cannot, therefore, be attributed to brilliant
strategies. The success of his apostolate depended above all on his personal
involvement in proclaiming the Gospel with total dedication to Christ; a
dedication that feared neither risk, difficulty nor persecution…From this we
can draw a particularly important lesson for every Christian. The Church’s
action is credible and effective only to the extent to which those who belong
to her are prepared to pay in person for their fidelity to Christ in every
circumstance. When this readiness is lacking, the crucial argument of truth on
which the Church herself depends is also absent. Dear brothers and sisters, as
in early times, today too Christ needs apostles ready to sacrifice themselves.
He needs witnesses and martyrs like St. Paul. Paul, a former violent persecutor
of Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by the divine light on the
road to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and
follow him without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he
suffered and died. How timely his example is today! “The Chief Shepherd of our
faith community desires that each of us goes beyond merely reading the various letters
of the great apostle ”born out of time.” He wants us to reflect in our daily
existences the principles taught in Galations, Corinthians, and Ephesians. We
must seek to pursue unity in the Church, understand the wisdom of the Gospel,
and bear the signs of the Cross.
Within this special time, a synod will be
held in Rome focusing on the scripture as a whole. Episcopal representatives as
well as theological scholars will meet in the Fall of 2008 under the leadership
of the Holy See to meditate upon: “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of
the Church.” It is an obvious
complement to its immediate predecessor: “The Eucharist: Source and Summit of
the Life and Mission of the Church.”
The preparation for this important assembly
has already begun. On the feast of the Annunciation, Archbishop Eterovic,
General Secretary of the Congregation for the Synod published a lineamenta.
This is a document which is published to frame the parameters of the topic as
well as to solicit the thoughts of the faith community’s leaders. While
reflecting on the meaning of the Word of God today, questions are proposed to
enhance future discussion and deepen understanding. In the Preface we read:
“The Word of God has shown itself to be a living force throughout the
course of salvation history. The Word of God is piercing. It casts light
on every person’s life and indicates the road to be followed…The Word of God
searches the sentiments of the heart, inclining persons towards good and
purifying them from what is sinful. In communicating Himself to the sinner, who
is called to holiness, God exhorts him to turn from his sinful ways…In docile
obedience to the Word of God, the Church follows the path of humility and
conversion in order to be always more faithful to Jesus Christ, her Spouse and
Lord, and to proclaim his Good News with greater conviction and authenticity.
The Word of God is active, as demonstrated in the personal lives of the
patriarchs and prophets and seen throughout the history of the Elect of the Old
and New Testaments. Jesus Christ bears witness to this in a totally unique way.
The Word of God became flesh…Through His Church, he carries on the proclamation
of the Kingdom of God and the healing of the sick…The Church continues to
accomplish these salvific works through the Word and the sacraments, especially
the Eucharist, the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church,
where the words of consecration produce through the grace of the Holy Spirit
their effect of transforming bread into the Lord’s Body and wine into His
Blood…The Word of God is therefore the source of communion not only between
humankind and God but also among people, one with another, all of whom are the
Lord’s beloved…From the Church’s inception, the Word of God has been her very
life. In Christ, Word-Incarnate through the power of the Holy Spirit, the
Church is ‘a kind of a sacrament or sign of intimate union with God, and of the
unity of all humankind’ (Lumen Gentium 1)…Following the example of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the Lord’s lowly servant, the Synod wishes to promote an inspired
rediscovery of the Word of God…in the heart of the church, in her liturgy and
in her prayer, in evangelization and in catechesis, in exegetical studies and
in theology, in personal and communal life, and also in the cultures of
humanity, purified and enriched by the Gospel…Reflection on the synodal topic
will become a humble prayer that…might illumine the path of humanity in the
Church and society through the course of history.
Two weeks from now, we will study this
document further. Next week, we will devote our attention to Respect Life
Sunday.
Jesus vivat,
Fr. Brian
