THIRTIETH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME
October 29, 2006
The blind beggar, Bartimaeus, would not listen to the many people
scolding him to be quiet, but shouted all the louder in prayer, “Son of David,
have pity on me!” Only then did Jesus call him over and answered his need.
Bartimaeus becomes a powerful example of how persistent we must be in prayer
when we are asking God to show us His will for our lives. And then, ask Him for
the grace to accept it. If you feel God is offering you the grace of a Church
vocation, please call Fr. Cahrles Szivos at 968-11340 (priesthood), Sr. Deanna
Sabetta at 212-371-1000 ext. 2803 (religious), and Deacon Anthony Cassaneto at
968-6200 ext. 8269 (deaconate).

THE
PASTOR’S COLUMN
As
you might imagine, travels creates many wonderful memories and my time in Rome
was no exception. With the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher, I
celebrated Mass at the titular church of Cardinal Egan and our namesake the
Chiesa de SS. Giovanni e Paulo very near the ruins of the Forum and the
Coliseum. We were privileged to have these sacred rites in the chapel which
houses the remains of Saint Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionist
Order which cares for this beautiful structure and its parishioners. Of
Course, one of the highlights of any pilgrimage to the Eternal City is a visit
to St. Peter’s Basilica. After an early morning liturgy, many of us
processed to the tomb of John Paul II and prayed for his soul in gratitude for
his papal service.
Knowing
that I would be in Italy at this time, I was invited to take part in
activities surrounding the sixtieth anniversary of the presence of the
Graymoor Friars in Rome. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge this
tremendous community of men who along with the Sisters of the Atonement have
made such a contribution to the Church, locally and universally.
Though
they are our neighbors in near by Garrison, New York and assist in many
parishes in our area, there might be a lack of familiarity with their history
and very diverse ministers. As members of the Episcopal Church, Lurana White
and Father Wattson sought to form a religious community in an area which
included an abandoned chapel. Because of their own religious experiences,
Father Paul and his companions thought they possessed a unique charism to pray
for and nurture the cause of Christian Unity. Early on they developed plans
for an annual Octave (Week) of Prayer for Christian Unity. (I might say, at
this point, anecdotally, that I can recall the posters lining the subway
station walls reminding all of this important time.) This effort, it must be
remembered, began long before the calling of the Second Vatican Council by
Blessed Pope John XXIII. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to assert
that the spirit of ecumenism which caused non-Catholic observers to be present
there as well the issuance of several of the documents on religious freedom
and faith relations came out of the earnest prayers and activities engendered
by this vital community. One of the first results, of course, of the prayers
for unity was acceptance of the Society of the Atonement (as they became
known) into the Catholic Church in 1909. Over the decades, though their
numbers might be relatively small, they have served in the ecumenical ministry
in many parts of the United States, Canada, England, Japan, and of course,
Italy.
In
terms of the latter, it was the hope of the founding members of the Order that
one day they might be active in the land of their patron: Saint Francis.
Having embraced his lifestyle of the evangelical counsels, they thought it
most appropriate for them to serve “to build up the Church” where he did.
The Sisters of the Atonement arrived there seventy-five years ago with the
Friars coming fifteen years later. During those decades both groups gained not
only the admiration and support of the Holy See, the respect of other churches
and ecclesial communities, but also other faith traditions. (At the Eucharist
marking the anniversary was present the personal representative of the
Archbishop of Canterbury.)
To
bring oneness to humanity is a mission that the friars recognize is not just
one which involves theological dialogue but also one which requires social
action. For almost one hundred years, the friars have reached out to the
broken of body and spirit through the work of Saint Christopher’s Inn. Long
before society dealt with the issues of substance abuse, this institution was
fulfilling in a dramatic way the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Law
enforcement would put the men who walked the streets of the city on the old
New York Central knowing the miracles that were occurring in Graymoor.
Individual religious were recognized for their moral leadership in this area.
Father Egan, for example, became known as the “Junkie Priest” because of
his work with troubled youngsters whose drug habits had alienated them from
family and put them on the road to self-destruction. Today these followers of
Francis and Paul continue to serve the poor, the needy, and the homeless,
people living with HIV/AIDS, those in hospitals and prisons in addition to
their traditional ministries. Seeking always the unity of men and women with
God and one another, the friars have a strong program of retreats and days of
recollection. They provide oases of peace for those experiencing stress and
spiritual dilemmas. I will always be in the debt of Father Bill Murphy who
encouraged and counseled the separated and divorced. He served as their
canonical advocate before the Metropolitan Tribunal. These men of God and
their sisters in religion have never turned a deaf ear to those in need of
aid, no matter what type.
When
I had the privilege of co-celebrating the Eucharist in the Church of Saint
Onofrio, the Church of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy
Sepulcher, and the titular Church of the wonderful Cardinal Furmo, I could not
help having a tremendous sense to God for having the opportunity to cross
paths with such dedicated servants. The Minister General of the Order, Father
Jim Puglisi, S.A., used for his homily the Johannine text of the Last Supper.
He stressed the importance for all, but particularly those with a religious
charism, to follow the example of Christ in washing the feet of all. What has
been done must continue to be until Jesus comes again. In his acknowledgements
in the conclusion of the Mass, he stated that we must pray for shalom. This
word he stated is not just a plea for toleration or the absence of war. It is
even greater than a call for oneness. It is an appeal for the condition to
exist once again when the world was in its infancy prior to original sin. It
is a plea for harmony. It is the desire that God’s will be done. May His
peace come upon us. May God bless the Friars and sisters of the Atonement who
have embodied shalom in their lives of ministry. May we who have benefited
from their service support them in every way possible.
Have
a great week.
Jesus
vivat,
Fr.
Brian
