Student Activities and Clubs

Evangelization Ministry

The Evangelization Ministry is student driven with the guidance of a faculty member. The Student Evangelization Team is tasked with organizing and directing the efforts of fellow students as they undertake the activities of this ministry. During the course of the school year, their efforts are directed to increasing community consciousness of our call to serve others and to celebrate our Catholic Faith (see Appendix 3 for a list of ministry leaders).

Student Council

The Student Council is newly elected each year among the students of the Jr. High. A student must be in academic good standing and show leadership qualities to be eligible for election to the Student Council. Under the supervision of a staff member, the Student Council is presented many opportunities throughout the year to responsibly carry out its leadership role in the school (see Appendix 3 for a list of elected officers).

Class Officers

Each Jr. High grade elects class officers for the year. Each class (6-8) elects a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and three Representatives from each homeroom to serve as class leaders. These individuals are charged with carrying out various community building efforts and activities during the year and are given the responsibility of watching over and promoting the general welfare of the class throughout the year. It is their added responsibility to promote school-wide activities and events among their classmates (see Appendix 3 for a list of class officers).

Band

The SJRCS Band is directed by Mr. Robert Spillane. Students who participate in the band rent or own their instruments. The band practices in the morning before school severaltimes each week. The band performs at the Christmas Show and at the end of the year. There is a fee for band participation.

Choir

The student choir consists of Jr. High students. Emphasis is placed on the role of a choir to enhance the prayerful atmosphere of a liturgical celebration and make it a meaningful and moving experience for the community. Students are encouraged to participate as cantors, song leaders, and instrumentalists. In addition to singing at our community liturgies, the choir also prepares a program of music for outside performances. The more experienced members are invited to participate in the smaller Mercy Choir which is available for funeral liturgies when requested.

Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination (DI) is an innovative educational program for interested students which provides challenging problem solving opportunities for students in grades 3-8. DI students work in teams to solve exciting and unusual long-term problems. They also train to compete in spontaneous brainstorming exercises. Teams meet weekly from October through March to prepare for regional competitions. The infectious enthusiasm at these year-end meets is shared by every participant - students, parents, coaches, and spectators alike. DI makes leaning a lot of fun!

Jump Rope Club

The Jump Rope Club is held for eight sessions after school during the months of February, March and April. Students participate in single, partner and long rope jumping skills to music. This club offers the opportunity for students in grades one to eight to improve their jump roping skills while improving their heart health and having fun.
