Grand Knight’s Message

My Brother Knights,

I hope your summer has been great and you have enjoyed all that this time of the year offers. We are now back to a full monthly meeting schedule. Our last business meeting was very productive. The following items were approved by the Council.

• The Cystic Fibrosis Org is our charity for this year
• We will announce the Knight of the Year in advance of the Charity Ball
• We will have a combined Officer Installation and Past Grand Knight Appreciation dinner
• Salary Award will be turned over to the council in total if no winner on the meeting night. There was no winner at the last meeting, so the money accumulated over past meetings was turned over to the council.
• The expenditure for the molding of the Memorial to the unborn was turned over to the treasurer for payment. The money ($4000) will come out of the Memorial Fund that was raised for this purpose.

So you can tell it was a busy meeting. I am asking all of you to reach out to a brother over the next few months and bring him to a meeting. We need everyone to get involved with the programs of the council. I will give you a list of activities and will ask for you to consider them and get involved by leading or participating in the program.

Starting with the 1^st Thursday in September, (Sept 1) we will meet every 1^st and 3^rd Thursday per the normal schedule.

We have a family event coming up on Sunday September 18. It is our first FAMILY Picnic at the Council house. It will be held from 2-6 PM. There will be games for the kids, horseshoes for the big kids, and fun for all. We will provide hotdogs and hamburgers plus soda, wine and tap beer for free. All we ask is that you bring a dish to share and have fun.

We hope to make this an annual event and grow it into a wonderful Family time. Please contact our Picnic leaders, Jim Farmer and Scott Morrisey, to sign up. There are sign up sheets on the board so we know what the attendance account is for food ordering.

I am asking that you offer your prayers for the soul of Vincent Aliberto who died last month. He was 95 years old and our oldest member. Several of the brothers attended the wake in my absence and offered prayers for Vincent. I am very grateful for their stepping up to honor our brother.

Please note that the Charity Ball date has been changed to Friday night October 28.

The Installation of Officers and Knight Appreciation Dinner is set for Sat., September 10 starting at 5pm. To plan accordingly please sign up on the bulletin board or call me by August 30 (281-7370).

There are still 65 members who have not paid their dues for the next Columbian Year. Consider this article as your 2^nd notice. Brothers, look in your wallet, if you do not have a BLUE membership card it means your card has expired and you need to renew your membership. Payment of dues which are $35.00 per year help with council expenses, pay per capita to both Supreme Council and State Council and maintain your membership as a Knight of Columbus. Please pay your dues promptly in order to avoid suspension.

Charity Ball (new date) – Art Beaver To Be Named Knight of the Year

This years Charity Ball will be held on Friday October 28, 2005 at the Somerville Elks. Out charity will be the Cystic Fibrosis Organization. Tickets are $45 each and include dinner, beer, wine and soda. Doors open at 7:00PM

Dinner will start at 8:00PM. Music supplied by Top Notch DJ. Dancing is optional. The Knight of the Year Art Beaver will be honored. There will be a silent auction for various articles that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will supply. A 50/50 raffle will be held during the cocktail hour and a drawing for some door prizes will be held. You will be receiving the tickets in the mail, get your reservations in early.

Knights Family Picnic – September 18^th

Join the Somerville Knights of Columbus for an afternoon of fun on Sunday Sept 18th, 2005 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. It will be held at the Somerville Knights of Columbus Hall, 495 East Main St, Somerville NJ All council members and their families including grandchildren are invited

Admission is FREE Includes: draft beer, wine, soda, hot dogs & hamburgers Mixed drinks and bottled beer is available at the bar at club prices. We ask that each family bring a covered dish/dessert to share.

ACTIVITIES: We will have games and activities for children of all ages including but not limited to face painting, sack races, balloon toss and relay races. Horseshoes will be available for the “Big Kids”.

MISC: We will have a grill available to cook or heat up any delights that you wish to bring for family & friends.

Membership Drive

A membership drive is scheduled for:

- Sept 24-25 at Holy Trinity, MMOG, and St. Joe

- Oct 29-30 at St. Bernard

VETS To MASS:

Many thanks to Brothers John Smith and Frank Mollo for helping take Vets to Mass on Sunday, August 14th at Lyons Veterans hospital. We took 12 Vets to Mass and the lady who organizes the program every Sunday had to personally escort 1 or 2 vets herself.

Brothers, this was a very poor showing from a council, with this many members, that claims to support our military. Remember, these are the fellows who hit the beaches in the Pacific, slugged their way through Europe and fought in non declared wars in Korea and Vietnam to help keep this country free. A Sunday morning to help get them to Mass, 4 times a year, is all they ask in return.

The next Vets to Mass Sunday is Nov. 13th. I expect a better showing from this council in November.

Columbus Club Corner

Hall Rentals: One of your benefits of membership in our council is the ability to rent the council hall. The decorated hall makes an excellent venue for many celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries, showers, sacraments, etc.

Remember the council hall is open every Thursday beginning at 7pm for socializing; so come on down.

2005 Patriots Ball Park Summary

4^th Ball Park Report

The fourth game at the Somerset Patriots was held on Wednesday, August 10. Again, it was a busy night, as a Double-Header to recover the game that ended on July 27 after 5 ½ innings.

A big thank you to the newest Ball Park Manager: Paul Rippas and his wife Jan and his Team of Knights: Bob Behling, John Bolton, Frank Carpinelli, Tom Faenza, Tony Fusco, Steve McCarthy, Miguel Medida, Joe Mele, Scott Morrisey, GK Ron Newsom, Nick Patullo, Al Rizzo, Dan Sullivan, Ed Thoden, PGK Jim Trenchard, Manny Vidal, Pete Ward, and me.

5th Ball Park Report

The fifth and final game at the Somerset Patriots was held on Monday, August 29. It was a quiet night, but a 13 inning game.
