Students at SSPJ in fourth through eighth grades may enroll in the Band Instrumental Music Program. Beginning students will receive
group lessons once a week during designated recess periods according to their particular band section (ie woodwinds, brass, percussion).
The band will rehearse as a unit after school once a week – they will prepare for several performances throughout the academic year.
Further musical focus than that of classroom experience is explored as students gain the skills and confidence to extend their musical
learning to a concentrated, disciplined performance experience.
SSPJ offers two Vocal Ensemble experiences to its students: the Junior Choir, which meets after school one day a week, is open to
students from grades 2nd-5th. The Senior Choir is available to middle school students (6th-8th) who wish to express themselves with
the introduction of sheet music works and designated “part singing”.
Children in both groups are taught the concepts of correct vocal production, aural comprehension, and attentiveness to the choral
conductor. Selections include sacred and secular works- vocal solo and duet opportunities are made available to those interested.
Choreography may be introduced on occasion, if warranted by the material.
The ensembles will perform at a variety of functions throughout the school year, including concerts and school masses.
