Back To School Night Wednesday, September 20

A Special Welcome to Our New Families

Sometimes joining a new school is like entering a new country because we have our own buzz words and dailiy routines that may be foreign to new families. We want you to be part of our school family and hope that you feel welcome at all times.
As a new family, we invite you to get to know the Teaching Staff, Administration, HSA Chairpeople and other families as much as possible. New families in grades 1-8 will be invited to a special Buddy Night celebration on Monday, August 28. New families will be contacted with more details. This evening's activities will give your child the opportunity to meet other children in his/her grade.

Come Join Us...

Our combined Mass/School Picnic/Movie will be held on our front field at SSPJ on Saturday, September 23.

School Store

Mark your calendar for the School Store dates coming up in August. The store will be open Tuesday, August 22 and Monday, August 28, to purchase homework assignment pads, writing tablets, and journals. The school store will have a list for each class to assist you. In addition to the school supplies, recycled uniforms will also be offered for adoption during the school store hours. Please take advantage of this generous sharing of resources from our famlies. This is a great way to supplement your uniform purchases.

First Days of School

As our summer days gently roll into September, SSPJ is ready to be filled again with the happy sounds of children learning. We missed you!
Tuesday, September 5 is the first day of school for grades 1-8. Kindergarten classes begin Thursday, September 7 and Pre-K on Monday, September 11. Our students have the option of wearing either dress or gym uniforms from September 5 through September 15. We anticipate hot, humid weather during those weeks. Please read all newsletters for information regarding dress code after the 15th. We do watch weather reports and guage the conditions in our building to keep our students as comfortable as possible. Please do not substitue casual clothing for our gym wear. If you are having a problem with uniform fit or delivery, please contact the Main Office.

After School Care

Our After Care Program continues to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students thanks to the experience and creativity of Miss Veal and all of her Assistant Providers. After Care begins September 5 -- the first day of school for grades 1-8. If you have questions or require enrollment info, please contact Mrs. Francisco in the Main Office. Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to great times!

Maschio's is Back!

Our food service provider for our cafeteria is Maschio's. Please read the information regarding nutrition in this packet. The cost of a student lunch is $2.25, and an adult lunch is $2.75.

A New Year Begins...

The start of a new school year means a new daily routine for the entire family. Here is a list of a few items you will need to know as the new year begins:

  • Lunchtime: Every school day, even early dismissals, includes a lunch period for grades PK-8. Children purchase lunch tickets weekly and order daily through their homeroom teacher. Monthly calendars are sent home in your packets. Children are also welcome to bring their lunch from home. Snacks are available for all students to purchase during lunchtime.
  • Peanut Gallery: There will be a "peanut free" table designated for all lunches in our cafeteria. Children with nut/food allergies and "friends" without peanut lunch products may share meals at this table.
  • Snacktime: Children in grades PK-3 will have a morning snack time. Families are encouraged to send in a nutritious snack and/or drink each day. Snack bags can be throwaway or reusable. Teachers will discuss snack time during Back to School Night. In PK and Kindergarten only, a full week of beverages can be purchased in advance through your homeroom teacher.
  • Weekly Communication Packets: The youngest child in each family will be responsible for bringing home an information packet each Wednesday. Please review the materials enclosed and return the envelope to the school the next day.
  • Visiting the Building: Each time you visit SSPJ School you will be asked to sign in at the Main Office. Whether you are going on a class trip or working lunchroom duty, you will be asked to enter through the main front doors and sign in for security reasons.

HSA Corner

Thank you HSA for all the anticipated activities you are planning for the 2006-07 school year.

Volunteers Needed

Our school depends on a high level of parent involvement and we have many opportunities available. Various fundraising opportunities will also be offered to helpyou reach your individual commitment toward the $125,000 HSA fundraising goal.
All volunteers who assist for more than one activity are required to be fingerprinted (excluding Carnival workers). SPSJ Parish gifts this protection to our children to safeguard their future. Future fingerprinting opportunities will be announced in our SSPJ Weekly Newsletters.

Ongoing Programs

Don't forget to save the lids, labels and UPC's from the Campbell's Soup Labels for Education program. Look for special markings on the qualifying packages. Many valuable items have been earned for the teachers and classrooms through this program, including playground balls and storage bags for recess and gym classes, and our friendly green flag safetyman.
General Mills "Box Tops for Education" are also collected for a cash reward. Be sure to check your cereal, tissue and other product boxes for the current logo.
Submissions for both programs can be sent to the school via your child's homeroom teacher. More info and updates will be sent home throughout the school year.

Scrip and Scrip Plus

Over the years, Scrip has become a gerat success! Tremendous thanks to our scrip volunteers. We salute your efforts! We continue to ask for salespersons to be available in the cafeteria at the end of each school day to supply "quick scrip," however, ordering and sales will be directly processed from the school's main office. Since scrip sales have increased, we have increased the amount of scrip we order to accomodate your needs. During the school year, please submit your requests for scrip via your child.
How does this work? We purchase gift certificates or cards for a number of establishments at a discount. For example, a grocery store offers a 4% discount, therefore a$100 certificate costs the school $96. Your family is able to purchase that gift certificate for $100 purchase $100 worth of groceries, and the school earns $4. It costs you nothing! GO SCRIP!
SPSJ Parishioners: read the parish bulletin for info regarding Scrip sales after Masses for specific holidays.

Girls Scouting at SSPJ: Stronger Than Ever!

Here at SSPJ, we are very lucky to have four active Girl Scout Troops with dedicated, enthusiastic leaders. There are two Brownie Troops (grades 1-3), one Junior Troop (grades 4-6), and one Cadette Troop (grades 7-8). We do not currently have a Daisy Troop (Kindergarten), so any Mom (or Dad) who enjoys arts & crafts, and is interested in leading a Daisy Troop, please let us know - it would be a terrific addition to our Girl Scouting Troops. If you and your daughter are interested in finding out more, please contact Karen at 908-387-9410.

What's New, Exciting, Interesting, and True at SSPJ?

"I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." Isaiah 49:15,16
Each summer, for the past 15, we have waited to hear from Mother Provincial Superior in regards to the return of The Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus to our school.
Last week, Mother Ryszarda sent a beautiful thank you letter to us explaining that the Sisters would not be returning for 2006-2007. She makes her decisions, with the help of God, based on the needs of the Sisters and of the school.
We were one of the few elementary schools in the diocese still to have nuns. Their work force is diminishing so rapidly.
The Sisters will be greatly missed for their modeling of the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and their caring of our SSPJ children.
A generous gift from the Parish School has been given to the Sisters in the name of the families. The Sisters asked not to have a farewell function in their honor in recognition of their service, and we aquiesced to their wishes.
We wish the Sisters God's blessings and gentleness for their future...
Most of our classroom teachers taught religion in the past and/or to their own homeroom children 1-3 days each week last year. Religion can never be separated outas a subjectthat is taught on a confined basis only. It is an entity that pervades the daily living of the school environment. We are currently working on the coverage of all the concepts that the children will need to know. We will share that plan as soon as possible.
Thank you Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Msgr. Corona and Mrs. Sena
