A message from our Pastor (Back to the Table of Contents)

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Here we go!!!

We have been talking about the need for a Parish Center for over 40 years. Now, we are taking a cue from the Nike ads that challenge us to Just Do It!!!

After closely examining the parish needs for today, and for the first half of this new century, we have completed a planning effort to offer a design for an enlarged Saint Patrick Church and a new Parish Center. The scale model for this parish dream is displayed in the church so that you can see what the parish facilities of the future will look like and to commend this project to the Lord. It is our effort and God's blessing that will ensure a successful conclusion to this momentous building program.

The history of Saint Patrick Church in Stoneham is rich in people, in pride, in tradition and in devotion. Built in 1887, our church has been a spiritual home to generations of parishioners. It has established itself as a significant presence and influence within the community. We are proud of Saint Patrick Parish.

For over 112 years, apart from small improvements, our church has remained the same. At this time, the parish community has outgrown our Church.

After nearly two years of planning, we are ready to begin enlarging our church and building the Parish Center. I commend the diligence of members of the Building Committee, Capital Campaign Committee, Finance Council and Parish Council, who have deliberated carefully so that every decision thus far has been a decision by consensus. This is certainly a manifestation of the Holy Spirit. I also thank all parishioners for their patience, time and interest.

I am pleased to invite all parishioners to participate in Building Upon Our Past...Preparing for Our Future. This campaign is designed to raise the funds necessary to enlarge the church and to build the parish center. I turn to each and every one of you to join together to help secure our future well into this millennium.

It is my strong conviction that enlarging the Church and building the proposed Parish Center is necessary and will improve the quality of worship and spiritual life at Saint Patrick. The legacy of our parish building which has been handed on to us must be responsibly maintained, nurtured and ultimately improved upon for the use of generations to follow. Building Upon Our Past...Preparing for Our Future is a unique opportunity for all of us to join together to renovate and enhance our parish facilities.

Please choose to participate by making a pledge over three years to the necessary fund raising to make our parish dream a reality. Your effort of continued encouragement and generosity assures me that together we will be able to achieve our goal. Please carefully read this brochure and then give prayerful consideration to the kind of sacrifice you can make for this vitally important endeavor.

With prayerful best wishes,

William T. Schmidt, Pastor

A Message from Our Campaign Leadership. (Back to the Table of Contents)

We are honored to be given the privilege to lead the Saint Patrick Parish campaign, "Building Upon Our Past ... Preparing for Our Future."

As parishoners, we have the opportunity to be part of a project that will positively impact not only the present, but the future of our parish. This historical event will take our parish well into the millenium. Both prayer and sacrifice of the entire parish community is needed to empower us to complete our goal of enlarging our church and building a parish center, that will meet both the present and future needs of our faith community.

Facing New Challenges. (Back to the Table of Contents)

The greatest challenge facing Saint Patrick Parish today is providing adequate space for Sunday Mass to accomodate our parishoners. We presently celebrate nine Masses on a weekend to accommodate our parishioners. As the only Catholic Church in Stoneham, we desparately need adequate space for worship for close to 3,500 parishioners at Sunday Mass. The need for a parish center is apparent. We currently have no proper meeting place for our youth or for adults. Our parishioners want to meet to build community, to socialize and to get to know one another as individuals and as fellow parishioners.

Church Enlargement

  • Double capacity of upper church from 550 to 1,100

  • Provide five level elevator with access to all levels of church, as well as school

  • Link church and parish center to school

  • Replace slate roof

  • Install new heating, air-conditioning and sprinkler systems

  • Add pews and stained glass windows to match existing

  • Provide additional parking
All work to meet current construction codes.

The Parish Center will embrace 22,500 square feet.

  • Multi-purpose hall with seating capacity for 300 at round tables or for 500 for auditorium seating

  • Modern kitchen

  • Four meeting rooms for parish organizations

  • Two Conference rooms

  • Library

  • Offices for CCD, Youth Director, Pastoral Staff, RCIA and Music Director

  • Storage area and coat room

  • Air conditioning

  • Handicap accessible

The projected cost for the new construction and renovation is $5.1 million

Like our ancestors who sacrificed so much to build our present church in 1887, we shoulder a responsibility to our present and future parish community. This project ensures that we will remain attentive to the needs of our parish family today, and reflects wise planning for the future. With the generous financial support and commitment of our entire parish family this endeavor will reach fruition and Saint Patrick Parish will flourish for many years to come.

Opportunities For Giving. (Back to the Table of Contents)

Pledges
Pledges to the Parish are payable over a period of three years or longer. Multi-year pledges enable the donor to contribute a larger gift than would be possible to make in any one tax year. (See Pledge Fulfillment Chart.) Please know that all contributions are treated with total confidentiality.

Securities
A gift of securities, to be held for the Parish, may be made by placing the securities with a broker, bank, or agent. A copy of the instructions for gifts of appreciated stock to Saint Patrick Parish is available at the Parish Office.

Unendorsed stock certificates require a letter of transmittal from the donor to the Parish or its agent. The transmittal should include name, address, gift purpose and description of securities. A corresponding stock power, accompanied by a copy of the letter of transmittal, must be sent under separate cover.

Planned Giving
Planned Gifts represent a special type of support that benefits you, the donor, and the Parish. Often a Planned Gift allows you to maximize your contribution and provides you specific income and estate tax advantages. Planned Gifts may also provide you with income during your lifetime. The Parish Office can provide you with information and assistance if you are considering a Planned Gift.

Life Insurance
The Parish may be named as the principal beneficiary of your insurance policy or ownership of the policy may be transferred to the Parish.

Common Questions and Answers. (Back to the Table of Contents)

Why is such a large parish center being planned?
We now serve over 4,800 families and have over 1,400 students in our religious education programs. This growth has put strains on the ability of St. Patrick's to provide facilities for its burgeoning activities. In addition to our religious education program, there is a need for meeting space for the other ministries and activities of the parish, as well as for many other programs which have been requested by parishioners. Our growing parish must also provide for the future, just as our predecessors provided for us. Visits were made to five parishes that had recently completed parish centers and the comment that the pastors each made was that the centers were already too small as soon as they were first dedicated. All five pastors cautioned against undersizing the construction of a parish center.

How will the operating costs of this building be covered?
The needs of the parish will be evaluated and an operating budget that meets these needs will be shared with all parishoners. Typically, after the completion of a capital campaign, there is increased participation that more than offsets the higher operating costs.

Who will be asked to give?
This is a parish center for all parishoners. Therefore, all members of the parish will be contacted to support the campaign. To succeed, the campaign will need thoughtful and appropriate pledges on all levels. To help you understand the size of the gift needed to reach our goal, please refer to the chart on page 9. However, the final decision about your gift is entirely yours.

Why should l pledge rather than pay cash?
We cannot expect to reach our goal of $5,100,000 from out-of-pocket, one-time donations. Pledging allows you to give what you truly believe to be a thoughtful, generous and proportionate investment rather than just what you can spare at the moment. Pledging permits making larger gifts by spreading out the payments over a three-year period.

Is my pledge in addition to my weekly offering or in place of it?
Pledges to the campaign should be viewed as being above and beyond the weekly offering which supports the operation of the parish. The capital campaign is a special way to provide the construction cost which cannot be met through the weekly offertory and Grand Annual contributions.

How will construction costs be paid for until the pledge payments are completed?
The Archdiocese will loan a portion of the funds necessary to pay for construction until pledge payments have been made.

Who will control the funds raised in the campaign?
The funds donated to the capital campaign, will be held in escrow by the Archdiocese in an interest bearing account and designated specifically for the project at Saint Patrick Parish.

Gifts Needed To Reach Goal. (Back to the Table of Contents)

Many additional gifts of $ 5,000 and under will be needed.
In order to reach our goal, we will need to have participation from all of our members and friends.

Campaign Prayer. (Back to the Table of Contents)

God of endless ages,
from generation to generation
You have been our refuge and our strength.
Look with favor upon this Parish of Saint Patrick
as we undertake a major investment in the future of this faith community.
We remember with gratitude and love the generations of believers
who have built this parish into a family of faith.
Their faith and commitment and their sacrificial love inspires us
as we undertake the enormous task that lies before us.

As we received the present parish buildings as their legacy,
so may we in turn provide for the generations that will come after us.
We construct the parish buildings that will enable the Parish of Saint Patrick
to continue to grow as a community of worship, faith formation and service
in the 21st century.

Building upon our past, let us prepare for the future.
Rooted in the faith of our spiritual mothers and fathers of past generations,
may we aspire to the sacred privilege of passing on that same gift of faith
to our sons and daughters of future generations.
As this faith community soars to new heights as a parish,
may we always do so in continuity
with our precious heritage of faith, hope and love.

Lord, we ask for just two things:
Grant us roots,
grant us wings.
Amen.
