Who Are We? Go back to the top
Troop 546 is the doorway to fun in the outdoors- with friends your own age! Our Troop is a "boy-run" organization in keeping with all the standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The three primary aims of Boy Scouts are to build character, active citizenship through leadership, and mental and physical fitness in each of our members. The Troop is made up of "patrols" or groups of four to eight Scouts who elect their Own Patrol Leader to serve on the Patrol Leader Council. This Patrol Leader Council makes all decisions for Troop programs, and is led by the Senior Patrol Leader - a boy elected by the whole Troop. Together, and as a team, the Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader Council plan and run all Troop programs under the careful advisement from a Scoutmaster and a team of many other trained adults. Fun is the name of the game!

When Do We Meet? Go back to the top
Troop 546 meets in the 'Old ' St Patrick School Hall every Tuesday that the Stoneham Public Schools are in session. (We do not meet during school vacations, or snow days.) Meetings run from 7pm to 8:30pm each week. Each meeting contains a skills presentation, Patrol meetings, inter-patrol activity, a game, and a chance to work on personal advancement. Announcement take place at the end of the meeting, right before closing.

How Do I Join? Go back to the top
To be eligible to be a Boy Scout you must be between the ages of 11 and 18 years of age. (For younger boys, Cub Scouting is offered to grades 1 through 5). You do not have to be a Stoneham resident, attend school in Stoneham, or be a member of St Patrick's Church to be eligible to join the Troop. Cub Scouting is not a pre-requisite to being a Boy Scout, though we welcome all Cubs that are crossing over. Second year Webelos Cub Scouts are eligible to join any time after April 1st.
Spring is the best time to register for Boy Scouts so that you will be able to attend summer camp with the Troop, though registrations for Troop 546 are accepted any time during the year. Special programs will be designed just for you and your needs during the first year for rank advancement - so don't miss out!

Troop 546 Summer Camp - July 27 / August 2 ,2003 Go back to the top
The pinnacle of the Scouting year is attending Boy Scout Summer Camp! As we did last year, Troop 546 will journey to Camp Wanocksett in Jaffrey, NH. Our experience has shown that the beginning of the Boy Scout experience is much easier and enjoyable if you attend summer camp with the Troop and experience all that Scouting has to offer! Summer Camp is a place to enjoy the woods, smell the campfire, earn merit badges, relax, and sharpen your scouting skills!

Advancement - The Trail to Eagle Go back to the top
In addition to all the weekly Troop meetings - Monthly camping trips-day hikes, bike trips, Town Days, and summer camps, personal advancement plays a vital role in the development of each Scout. The primary difference between Cub Scout and Boy Scout advancement is that you will learn the responsibility of earning your own advancement-not led by your parent. Right from the start, we will assist you, and give you all the tools you will need to achieve your utmost on the 'Trail to Eagle Scout'. Older Scouts will serve as Troop Guides and will help design your program during the first year.
It is a long road, but one you will never forget. It will be filled with bumps and bruises, triumphs and accoladesŠand every bit counts! Troop 546 has a long-standing tradition of Eagle Scouts. Come and be part of it!

What Do I need? Go back to the top
After joining, first and foremost, obtain a copy of the Boy Scout handbook!! After reviewing the parent's section (with your parents) and the beginning of the book, refer to Chapters 8 and 9 for some ideas of what equipment you will need. The one item you need to purchase right away is: The shirt and the Boy Scout Handbook are available at the New England Scout Shop located in Winchester at 123 Washington St (781)-721-6860, and in other stores in Massachusetts. The Scout Shop, as well as many sporting goods stores, will be a good resource in purchasing any equipment. Remember, you don't need to buy the most expensive equipment you can find, but neither should you buy the cheapest. Another hint- it isn't necessary to purchase every bit of equipment all at once, you can gradually build up your inventory in stages. Scouting/camping equipment makes a great birthday or holiday gift! Ask your Senior Patrol leader or one of the Scoutmaster group if you need advice or help in this area. The Troop does have patrol boxes with cooking supplies for use by the Patrols on camping trips. There are also some tents available.
