White Privileges

  1. I can walk down a residential street in a white neighborhood and no one will think that I am a maid or gardener.

  2. I am not terrified to have my car stopped by a policeman late at night suspected only because of my race.

  3. When I walk into a store in the evening no one thinks I am there to rob it.

  4. My children probably do not attend a deteriorating sub-standard school.

  5. I am not likely to be living in sub-standard housing.

  6. I believe I would be considered fairly for any job opening.

  7. I am not the object of “corporate suite” discrimination.

  8. I can be pretty certain of renting or purchasing a house I can afford in an area in which I want to live.

  9. I can go shopping fairly assured that I will not be followed or harassed by story detectives.

  10. If I have a responsible job no one thinks I got it because of “quotes.”

  11. Other white people waiting at a bus stop late at night will not likely be frightened of me.

  12. If I make grammatical or spelling errors no one will attribute it to my race or ethnic group.

  13. Taxis do not deliberately pass me by at night.

  14. I never have to worry about how I will be welcomed in a restaurant, shop, etc., in the suburbs.

  15. I believe I will get fair treatment when seeking a bank loan.

  16. People hear that I am a college student without being surprised.

  17. No one assumes that when I give my opinion on something that I am speaking on behalf of my race.

  18. I can usually be sure that if I ask to talk to “the person in charge” I will be facing a person of my race.

  19. It's not automatically assumed that my children will do poorly in school.

  20. I can turn on the television or open the front page in the paper and see people of my race widely and positively represented.

  21. I can do well in a challenging situation without being called a credit to my race.

  22. If I want to teach my children about their culture, there are many museums and events to which I can take them.

  23. I can easily buy picture books, greeting cards, dolls and toys featuring people of my race.

  24. I can remain oblivious to the language and customs of persons of color who constitute the world's majority.
