Dear Parents,
One of the goals of the curriculum at St. Anthony School is to foster a love of reading. Unfortunately, many students seldom read unless there is an assignment, and then do so reluctantly. Time after time, however, we have witnessed children reluctantly begin to read a book and become "hooked" and really enjoy finishing the book! These children are then apt to read more on their own.
In an effort to promote the concept of reading for pleasure, we are requiring each student to read two books from the attached list over the summer months. Upon return to school in August, each student in grades 1 and 2 must turn in an illustration of each book read (two), along with the title and author. A grade will be given in Reading for this assignment which is due by Friday of the first week of school.
Please keep the suggested book list to assist your child in choosing worthwhile literature for other leisure reading or future assignments.
Of course, the more books the child reads the more benefit he/she will receive from reading. We also recommend that the child join the local library's summer book club.
We know that we can count on your support and cooperation in this endeavor.
Sincerely,
Marie K. Cannon
Principal
