Dear
Parents,
As educators we have become increasingly aware over recent years
of the necessity of promoting a balance between the time children spend
watching the visual media (movies, television, videos, video
games) and reading. With such a large and varied array of new and exciting
gadgets and activities, it is no wonder why children choose to spend less and
less time with
books.
One of the goals of the curriculum at St. Anthony School is to
foster a love of reading. We are convinced that the majority of our children in
grades 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 seldom read
unless there is an assignment, and quite often not even then. Time after
time, however, we have witnessed children reluctantly
begin to read a book for a book report, become "hooked", and really
enjoy finishing the book.
We may very well wonder, then, why children do not develop a habit
of reading for fun. We believe that the competition for a child's leisure time
among the elements of the passive visual media has made reading as a pastime an
event of times past.
Therefore, in an effort to promote the concept of reading for
pleasure among our students, St. Anthony School has established a summer
reading program. Each student entering grades 3,4,5,6,7,
and 8 is required to read two books from a list selected by the reading
teacher. Students must read these two books carefully. They will be tested on
the contents of these books at the beginning of the school year. The grades
earned on these tests will become the first two reading grades of the year.
Sincerely,
Marie K. Cannon
Principal
Please keep
this list for your use all school year. If it is lost a new one must be
