Dear Parents,

As educators we have become increasingly aware over recent years of the necessity of promoting a balance between the time children spend watching the visual media (movies, television, videos, video games) and reading. With such a large and varied array of new and exciting gadgets and activities, it is no wonder why children choose to spend less and less time with books.

One of the goals of the curriculum at St. Anthony School is to foster a love of reading.  We are convinced that the majority of our children in grades 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 seldom read unless there is an assignment, and quite often not even then.  Time after time, however, we have witnessed children reluctantly begin to read a book for a book report, become “hooked”, and really enjoy finishing the book.

We may wonder, then, why children do not develop a habit of reading for fun.  We believe that the competition for a child’s leisure time among the elements of the passive visual media has made reading a pastime an event of times passed.

Therefore, in an effort to promote the concept of reading for pleasure among our students, St. Anthony School has established a summer reading program.

Students must read two books from Accelerated reading list.  No book may be more than 2 grades below student’s grade in school.  Example:  A student entering Grade 6 cannot read a book below level 4; a seventh grader below level 5; an 8th grader below level 6.

Tests will be given as soon as school starts in August.

Warning:  The tests are on the novels, not the movie version.  It is cheating to try to pass a test by watching the movie.

                                                                                                                    Sincerely,
