The St. Bede community has been a vibrant part of Pittsburgh’s East End since 1922 when the Parish celebrated its first Mass at the Penn Avenue home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hogan. The 2.8 acre site where St. Bede Church and Elementary School now stand belonged to Lizzie D. Schoyer, the widow of a wounded Civil War veteran.  The house that Captain Schoyer built on the corner of South Dallas and Edgerton Avenues remains today as the residence for the Parish priests and the Parish office.

The first church building at St. Bede was constructed in 1923, and was a plain, frame structure located along Willard Street.  The main part of the school, built in 1926, faced onto Edgerton Avenue. In 1950 the present church building was constructed next to the school, and the gymnasium was added in 2000.

St. Bede Parish, under the leadership of Rev. Edward M. Bryce, currently serves nearly 900 families, an increase of more than 50% since 1990. In 1993, St. Bede welcomed families from the former St. Philomena Parish in Squirrel Hill. Growing membership is also attributable to stability of the thriving neighborhoods surrounding the Parish. Active organizations within the St. Bede Parish community include the St. Bede Guild, the CCD Program for young people, Parent Teacher Guild, Athletic Association, Church Choir, the Senior Citizens organization, and many others. The growing number of young families attending Mass led to the recent introduction of a Childrens' Liturgy and a family room.

St. Bede Elementary School enrollment has increased nearly 50% over the last decade to over 325 students from preschool through eighth grade.  Based on standardized test scores, St. Bede Elementary School is consistently ranked in the top 5% of all schools tested nationally, and one of the top three elementary schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.  In addition to a strong and diverse core curriculum, St. Bede emphasizes art, music, computer science, foreign languages, and organized intramural and diocesan league athletics. Fundamental to every program is the practice and encouragement of traditional Catholic values, with continuous emphasis on self-respect and respect for others.

In 1995, the continued growth of the St. Bede Parish, as well as the increased use of St. Bede facilities by Parish and neighborhood groups, led the Parish Council to re-evaluate the facilities and their ability to provide for the community into the next millennium. A structurally sound, expanded facility was deemed essential to serving St. Bede Parish and the larger community. Nine projects ranging from the routine (upgraded wiring, roof repairs, etc.) to the visionary (construction of a activity center) were identified for inclusion in the $1.6 million “St. Bede Campaign 75.”  This very successful capital campaign was launched in 1996 and coincided with the 75th anniversary of St. Bede Parish and School. Ground was broken in June 1999. The new facility and renovations to the exisiting building included a new gymnasium, meeting room, cafeteria, kitchen, science labs, art and music rooms and general classroom renovations. The facility was finished on schedule and officially dedicated by Bishop Donald Wuerl on February 20, 2000.
