Altar Servers
[Top]

Altar serving is a special ministry in the Church.  Jesus loves the company of the “Little Ones”.  Altar Serving is a chance for them to participate more fully in the leadership within the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Children in fifth grade and up are eligible to serve.

There are four weekend Masses, 7:00AM and 9:00AM weekday Masses, as well as weddings and funerals which servers are expected to assist with, as scheduled.  Training sessions for new servers are held Saturday morning during the Lenten season (other arrangements are available according to need).

St. Bede Sunday School Program (CCD)
[Top]

The program is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers from the parish and serves children in grades 1 - 8 attending public and non-Catholic independent schools in the East End of Pittsburgh.  We currently serve approximately 75 students from 20 different area schools.  Our experienced staff is committed to providing the best religious education possible while employing creative, interactive methods, using the latest diocesan-approved texts and other materials.  Our teachers are involved in diocesan workshops and CCD certification classes as continuing education enhancements to their classroom instruction.  We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to acquaint and inspire your children with the Catholic faith.  Today more than ever, there is an urgent need to give our children ethical, moral, and spiritual teaching and reinforcement.  A peer-oriented, age-appropriate setting for such transmittal is an effective method of getting them to capture these important teachings for themselves.  A nominal fee of $15 per year in support of books and materials is charged. For questions or to visit anytime, please call the rectory at 412.661.7222.

CCD is offered on Sundays from 9:30 - 10:20AM, allowing family time for Mass either before (at 8:30AM) or after (at 10:30AM).

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Committee
[Top]

Adult volunteers lead children, ages preschool through about 4th grade, in a Children's Liturgy of the Word.  The Children's Liturgy of the Word uses the Sunday Liturgy readings adapted for younger Catholics, followed by discussion appropriate to a child's understanding and experience of the world.  Children are led out of Mass at the conclusion of the Entrance Rite and rejoin the congregation at the Offertory.  Parents can accompany their children or remain with the congregation.  No pre-registration is necessary.

Every 1st, 3rd, and 5th(where applicable)  Sunday of the month and every Sunday during the Lent and Advent seasons.

 Children’s Mass

Youth meetings are held from 6-7:30PM every Sunday. Other activities are scheduled throughout the year.   Watch the Sunday bulletin for details.

St. Bede Elementary School

The thrust toward educational excellence at St. Bede School is one that flows from the belief that each child is a unique human being endowed with special gifts. We believe that each child should be able to develop these gifts and to participate in a learning environment that promotes love of God, love of nature, and love of self.

We believe that a truly Catholic-Christian education aids in the development of responsible persons who will make meaningful contributions to a faith community and to an interdependent world.

St. Bede provides a supportive environment, a challenging curriculum rich in gospel values, opportunities for concrete acts of service, and meaningful activities and athletics that will enable each child to maximize his/her academic potential.

The school services over 300 students in grades Preschool 3 through 8th.  It follows the curriculum standards of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania and is accredited by the Middle States Association.  Registration and tuition information is available from the school office at 412.661.9425.

St. Bede Athletic Association

The Athletic Association provides for the interscholastic athletic activities at St. Bede. The association strives to develop the children’s sportsmanship and athletic skills to complement the spiritual and academic growth cultivated by the parish and school. Currently we participate in Diocesan cross-country, basketball, and football leagues.  The association provides coaching and equipment, and coordinates the scheduling of practices and games.  We also furnish equipment for the physical education classes and intramural athletics at the school.  Active parent participation in coaching and game management is crucial to our ability to successfully provide for our children’s growth as Christian athletes.

The association holds two major fundraisers, Mardi Gras on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, 7PM, and the Christmas Tree Sale during December.
