Religion
In Kindergarten and Grade 1
the children focus on the love for Jesus, ourselves, and others. The children
learn about the importance of family and helping others. In Grade 2 the children
learn about the sacraments Reconciliation and the Eucharistic. The children
prepare for the sacraments throughout the school year. The Church continues
the work of Jesus today by sharing the Good News, celebrating the sacraments,
and serving all God's people is the theme for Grade 3. Worship, service,
and prayer are a large part of the Primary Religion curriculum.
Language Arts
The Primary Language Arts program
teaches reading, writing, listening, and speaking as an integrated process
within a literature-based curriculum. Phonetic decoding and comprehension
are taught as part of the reading process. Students write in various modes
and learn the writing process to revise and edit work. Writing mechanics
are taught along with grammar.
Mathematics
The primary math curriculum
develops mathematical skills and concepts. Content includes numeration
and order, patterns, functions, sequences, operations, measurement, and
geometry. Memorization of basic math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division are required.
Science
The Primary Science program
emphasizes a hands-on approach fostering the children's natural curiosity
about the world. The children develop skills in asking scientific questions,
observing, and measuring. Major topics of study include living creatures,
matter, energy, mechanics, our planet and space.
Social Studies
The Primary Social Studies curriculum
develops an understanding of various cultures and essential geographic
skills. The children study urban, suburban, and rural living. The children
also study map skills, landforms, and a bit of history. Children will also
discuss current events through newspaper and magazine articles whenever
appropriate. Atlases are used in Grades 1-3. Grade 3 has a Social Studies
textbook.
Fine Arts
Primary Music explores fundamental
processes of performing, creating, and responding to music, emphasizing
musical elements and literacy. Responses are fostered through singing, movement,
and playing instruments. Children develop critical listening skills. The
Primary Art program encourages individual expression in various art modes
such as water color, pencil, and clay. The children discuss art in contexts
of community, culture, and history. The children investigate tools, processes,
and vocabulary. Self-assessment and peer review are encouraged.
Foreign Language
The study of French, Italian,
and Spanish is offered to the children in the Primary Grades. The children
develop vocabulary and cultural awareness through repetition, games, songs,
and technology.
Physical Education
The Primary program develops
locomotor skills, balance, eye-hand coordination, and gross motor skills.
Activities include low organization games, team sports, and tumbling skills.
The program introduces the topic of team play and encourages cooperative
learning.
Library & Computer
The Primary Library program
fosters literature appreciation, instruction in library terms, concepts,
procedures, and book care. Reading for pleasure is encouraged. Practical
skills in the Primary Computer classes include letter recognition, formal
keyboarding, and word processing. The program supports instruction in the
content areas, including Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Religion
In Grade 4 we respond to God's
call by living as members of the community of the Church. By studying the
ten commandments, the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and the Beatitudes
the children develop a better understanding of what it means to live as
Jesus did. Grade 5 the children learn about the seven sacraments in order
to share the life and person of Jesus in a special and unique way. The children
in Grade 6 study the Old Testament learning about persons of faith. Worship,
service, and prayer are a large part of the Intermediate Religion curriculum.
Language Arts
The Intermediate Language Arts
program develops comprehension, vocabulary, and decoding skills as essential
elements for successful reading. Through the study of various genre the program
combines literature with relevant skills instruction. Students write in
various modes and learn the writing process to revise and edit work. Writing
mechanics are taught along with grammar.
Mathematics
The intermediate math curriculum
develops mathematical skill and concepts. Content includes computational
skills with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Geometry is studied
in Grades 4-6 as well as measurement, numeration, functions, patterns, problem-solving
strategies, sequences, and spatial sense. Ratio and percent is studied in
Grade 6. Using calculators, hands-on activities, games, technology, and rote
practice the children develop valuable math skills.
Science
Using laboratory, technological
resources, and textbooks, the children in the Intermediate Science classes
develop skills in asking scientific questions, observing, and measuring.
The major topics of study include space, physical, earth, and life sciences.
Social Studies
The children in Grade 4 study
the geographic areas of the United States and some U.S. history. The children
in Grade 5 study American history from discovery through the settlements.
In Grade 6 the children study Ancient World History: Egypt, Greece, and
Rome. The children in the Intermediate Social Studies classes also discuss
current events.

6 may also study Latin as an elective course.
Physical Education
The Intermediate program continues
to develop gross motor skills, balance, and eye-hand coordination. Classes
include team sports, physical fitness, and specific sport skills. The program
encourages team play and cooperative learning.
Library & Computer
The Intermediate program fosters
literature appreciation, instruction, in library terms, concepts, procedures,
and book care. Reading for pleasure is encouraged. Practical skills in
the Intermediate Computer program includes keyboarding, word processing,
creating spread sheets, data base, and graphics. The program supports instruction

Religion
Seventh and eighth grade is
a time of rapid change. Physically, cognitively, morally, emotionally,
and socially these young people are "crossing the bridge" between childhood
and adulthood. In Grade 7 the students study the life of Jesus Christ by
reading the New Testament. They develop a better understanding of what it
means to live as Jesus did. In Grade 8 the students prepare for Confirmation
by exploring the traditions and doctrines of the Catholic Church, and applying
them to their own life situation. They are presented with a brief overview
of Church History.
Language Arts
The Upper Elementary Language
Arts program focuses on an introduction to American literature and enjoying
literature. Extensive analysis, critical writing, and revision are integral
to the program. Extended written responses to a diverse literature curriculum
as well as creative writing projects are incorporated. Research papers and
discussion of novels are also a part of the curriculum.
Mathematics
Pre-Algebra and Algebra I are
taught in Grades 7-8. The students learn skills for success in Algebra,
linear and and quadratic equations, working with variables and data, inequalities,
radicals, exponential, polynomial, and rational functions, as well as connecting
Algebra and Geometry. Using calculators, graphing calculators, technology,
and rote practice the students develop their math skills.
Science
Using laboratory, textbooks,
and technological resources, the students in the Upper Elementary Science
program develop skills in asking scientific questions, observing, and measuring.
In Grade 7 the students study Earth Science while the students in Grade
8 study Life Science.
Social Studies
The students in Grade 7 study
U.S. History (Colonies to the Civil War). In Grade 8 the students
study the American History from the Civil War to present. The students in
the Upper Elementary program also discuss current events as they occur throughout
the school year. Reading newspaper and magazine articles as well as research
are an integral part of the Social Studies program.
Fine Arts
Upper Elementary Music continues
to explore processes of performing, creating, and responding to music,
emphasizing musical elements, concepts, and literacy. The students listen
to music from various cultures and genre, developing critical listening
skills and are encouraged to find pleasure and value in music. The Upper
Elementary Art program encourages individual expression in various modes
such as photography, ceramics, painting, metal fabrication, and enameling.
The students also study Art History exploring various painters and media.
Self-evaluation and peer review are encouraged.
Foreign Language
The study of French, Italian,
and Spanish is offered in the Upper Elementary Foreign Language program.
The students study vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Elementary listening,
speaking, writing, and reading skills are developed in order to prepare
students for future high school language study. The students may also study
Latin as an elective course.
Physical Education
The Upper Elementary program
continues to develop motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Team sports
and specific sport skills is the primary focus of each class. The program
encourages team play and cooperation.
Library & Computer
The Upper Elementary program
encourages reading for pleasure as well as for discussion. The children are
required to read certain novels for discussion. The children also are required
to complete a research project. The students in Grade 8 participate in the
Stock Market Game, purchasing stock and following the stock market in the
newspaper. The Upper Elementary Computer program includes keyboarding, word
processing, creating spread sheets, data base, graphics, multi-media programs,
and internet navigation. The program also supports instruction in the content
areas.
