Saint Anthony of Padua Feast

  Pastor's Message
Dear Friend and Devotee of Saint Anthony,
Once again we are proud to invite you to join our North
End Catholic Community in celebrating the feast of Saint
of Padua. Devotion to Saint Anthony has been fostered by
the Franciscan Friars since they established their ministry
in the North End of Boston 133 years ago. Devotion to
saint was already part of the spirituality of the thousands
of immigrants who came to the new world from Italy and
other countries and whose descendants remain here and
and have experienced many times over the powerful
protection of the Saint of Padua.

Continuing this tradition we honor Saint Anthony and
implore him for the many people who have asked us to
pray for their special intentions. The religious and social
program that follows wishes to bring the community
together in a spirit of prayer and fraternal gathering.
We will be honored to have you with us on this special
  occasion.
Raffle tickets for the lottery traditionally connected with
this feast are available at the Parish. Please help us

sell them. If you prefer you may make a donation for

Saint Anthony bread and oil. Your donation will be given

to the poor. By Easter you will be able to read our
the first issue of our newsletter (Renaisance/Rinascimento)
that will be published quarterly. It is a humble
instrument by which we wish to keep in touch with all
those who have any connection with our North End
Community. We would appreciate your feedback and any
stories that you would like to share.
Please visit the historic and beautiful churches that
make up our North End Community of Churches. I wish
to assure you of our constant remembrance of you and your
loved ones in our prayers and Masses especially during
the novena in preparation for the Feast of Saint Anthony.

  Saint Anthony of Padua
  Feast Day June 13th
Patron of the Poor and those who lost something
Saint Anthony, called "Saint Anthony of Padua" on account
of his long residence in that city, was a native of Lisbon,
Portugal where he was born on August 15, 1195. When
.he was 15 years of age he joined the Canons Regular of
Saint Augustine. Soon after, stricter observance of
religious life, he transferred to the Holy Cross Monastary
in Coimbra where he prepared for the priesthood. He
lived in this house for 8 years, intent on his studies,
when the relics of 5 Franciscan martyrs were brought

from Morocco to Portugal. This event inspired him to

follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis. He obtained the
the consent of the prior and passed over to the Franciscan
order at the age of 25 and took the name of Anthony. After
some time he obtained leave to go to Africa and preach
to the Moors where he became severely ill and returned
to Spain. At that time, Saint Francis was holding a chapter
in Assisi. Friar Anthony attended the gathering and from
there was sent to a monastary in Forli and later to Rimini.
His talents could not be kept hidden any longer. He was
asked to teach theology in Bologna and later Toulouse,
  Montpellier and Padua.
At the General Chapter of the Friars Minor, he was
appointed Provincial of the Romagna province. He gave

up teaching to devote himself to the work of preaching,

which he was an accomplished orator. In this work he

travelled through France, Spain, and Italy. Feeling that
his days were coming to an end, he asked to be relieved
of his duties as Provincial and retired to the hermitage
Camposampiero. When he expressed the desire to return
to Padua to die, his brother companion, Ruggero, hired
a small cart to take him. On the way, at Arcella, the Saint
knew his hour was coming, asked to receive the Sacrement
of the Sick and expired peacefully on June 13, 1231 at
  the age of 36.
