St.
Paul of the Cross Monastery
Food Bank

.
From the beginning of the Passionists in Pittsburgh back in the 1850s the
Monastery has sought to help the poor in their neighborhood. Homeless men
were welcomed and fed - a forerunner to the Monastery's present-day Food
Bank.
.
Now, the Food Bank is completely staffed by volunteers. The Monastery's
maintenance supervisor and housekeeper assist them on Thursday mornings
by picking up a weekly supply of donated food. Volunteer managers Frank
and Marie O'Reilly of Baldwin borough handle food purchases, donations
and other administrative chores. A core of 8-10 loyal volunteers is on
hand each Friday morning to hand out the food.
.
Fred Martelli is one of these dedicated volunteers who gives his time to
St. Paul's Food Bank. Frank was recently honored for his volunteer work
at our Food Bank at a luncheon at Station Square sponsored by Allegheny
County's Retired and senior Volunteer Program. Our congratulations to Frank,
and to all of our Food Bank volunteers who continues Christ's work of reaching
out to those in need.
