The Sign of Christ

News from the Catholic Deaf Community

Diocese of Syracuse

Vol. 20 No.2 - June - July - August 2009

FATHER SHAWN P. CAREY

May 23 and May 24, 2009 was a joyous weekend.  Shawn Carey was ordained as the first Deaf priest for the Diocese of Boston.  Saturday, he was ordained by Cardinal Sean O’Malley and assigned to serve the Deaf Community.  Sunday, his first Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving was in ASL.

Father Shawn Carey faced many obstacles growing up and in following his call from God, but he did not give up. Saturday, it was wonderful to see Cardinal O’Malley sign, and to see so many interpreters serve both the Deaf and the Hearing. Sunday, it was inspiring to see his first Mass. Mary Margaret and her husband Jim, your webmaster, were there.

You can find the story and picture at the Boston Globe newspaper.

and at the Cardinal's blog.

Hopefully you will meet him someday;  just remember that he is a Boston Red Sox fan.

BISHOP ROBERT J. CUNNINGHAM

May 26th 2009 was a special day for the Diocese of Syracuse. It was the Installation of our new bishop, Bishop Robert Cunningham.

He grew up in Buffalo, and five years ago he was chosen to become Bishop of the Ogdensburg Diocese, our neighbor to the North.

For the Mass I was seated with his friends from Buffalo,  who pointed out something to watch for:
when he stands to give his homily, he will lean on the pulpit, relaxed.

Later, when I was introduced to Bishop Cunningham, wearing the lei given him by Sisters,
he learned a sign for you...as you see in the picture.

We say Welcome to Bishop Robert Cunningham
the 10th (thumbs up!) Bishop of Syracuse.

This & That

June 19th, the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, will begin The Year of the Priest.
Please pray for all our priests.

We wish Bishop James Moynihan the best on his well deserved retirement

The Thomas Johns Memorial Appreciation Award was to be awarded at the Palm Sunday Mass and Dinner which had to be cancelled due to Bishop Moynihan’s health.  It will be held and presented next year. Hopefully there will be a Mass with  Bishop Robert Cunningham.

Rest In Peace
Frank Rakowski, husband of Pauline
Anne Campbell, mother of Christopher
Frank Carulli, father of Carolyn Schindler

Congratulations
Lu Folmar, our dedicated interpreter at St James in Johnson City, on her degree in nursing.
Beth Thurlow on graduating from Cayuga Community College.
Karolina Lachut who graduates from NYSSD.

Congratulations also to our newest priest of the Syracuse Diocese: Fr Lukasz Kozlowski, ordained June 6th.

Thank you to the Central NY Chapter of the  Knights of Columbus  for their continuing support.
They presented us with a check for $1100.

Summer Picnics
Yes, it’s that fun time of year!  If you see Kris Scheibel say hi.  He is studying for the priesthood...and needs to practice his signing!  Maybe Zach Miller, another seminarian, will be able to come sometime.  He is learning too.

Interpreted Masses
You may notice more on the calendars!
Holy Trinity in Fulton has begun regular interpreted Masses.
All Saints in Syracuse now will have Dr Martin interpreting every Sunday.
Would you like to have an interpreted Mass set up in Cicero?  Let me know.

The famous writer G. K. Chesterton became a Catholic.
Why?
He wrote: “The difficulty of explaining why I am Catholic, is that there are 10,000 reasons
all amounting to one reason: that Catholicism is true.”

In March... Did you catch the Leprechaun?  They did!

 Lori Booth

 Krista Chapple

Janette Carpenter & Ted Sawanec

Anne Parish did too!

 Rose Benedict

 Caroline Moore

 Mary Jane Deumme

Good luck next year catching the leprechaun!

Here's the leprechaun at Blarney Castle in Ireland, April 2008. It is said that when you kiss the Blarney Stone, the next kiss passes on the gift of Blarney....so she kissed her hands.
Did it work?

August 15th : Feast of the Assumption of Mary.  This year it is NOT an Holy Day of Obligation. Confusing? YES!

If a Holy Day of Obligation is on a Saturday or a Monday, Catholics are not obligated to go to Mass, except for the Immaculate Conception (Dec 8th)  and Christmas (Dec 25th). If they are on a Saturday or Monday, you need to go to Mass.

Of course, you are always encouraged to go to Mass...even everyday if you can!

Catholics have a sacramental view of the world. That is, for a Catholic, all of creation is good, and everything in our finite world can be a vessel of God’s presence and God’s transforming grace.

This idea provides the foundation for Catholicism’s rich mysticism and spirituality, its unparalleled social justice doctrine, its care of the poor, and its exquisite legacy of artists and writers.
