The Sign of Christ

News from the Catholic Deaf Community

Vol. 19  No.2   - June  -July  - August 2008

Sacraments
Sacraments are “ powers that comes forth” from the Body of Christ, which is ever-living and life-giving.

They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church.  They are “the masterworks of God” in the new and everlasting covenant.

The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.

The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament.  They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions."

There are 7 Sacraments.  The Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation are called the Sacraments of Initiation.
The others are Holy Orders, Penance, the Blessing of the Sick, and Matrimony.

Would you like to get married in the Catholic Church BUT you’re divorced and don’t know what to do?
Or are you wondering how to get your marriage blessed? Ask Mary Margaret.

This & That

I hope you are enjoying all the pictures and information in this issue.  Please pray for all those who support us!

Thank you to Virginia Grant who made the beautiful new banner for our Palm Sunday celebration.

Congratulations to St Lucy’s, one of three organizations honored for generously serving the hungry and homeless.
Some of the members of their Deaf Community attended the Good Samaritan Awards banquet on May 9th.

Please pray for these who have died, and also their families:
Peter Civitelli, Jr, husband of Geraldine
Gertrude McLain, mother of Rebecca Clark
Amy Van Sickle, one of our interpreters
Brian Butler, only 24
Vincent Femia, brother of Mary Menotti.

Thank you to those who came to ICDA 102's Spring Dinner and those who donated to and bought tickets for the raffle.
The money raised helps send young people to camps and other activities, such as NCYC.  This July we are hoping to bring two young people to the Deaf Youth Leadership Camp with Fr Mike Depcik in Michigan.

Please check out Fr Mike Depcik’s new vlog: www.frmd.org  I think you will really like it!

Note: The next newsletter may be late due to Mary Margaret’s trip to Madagascar to visit her daughter.

Don’t forget: Sign up for Religion Classes at NYSSD! Classes will start in late September.
Would YOU like to help with one or more classes? Students learn more from Deaf adults. Let Mary Margaret know.

September 9th Barber Shop and ICDA 102's Meeting to plan the year’s events 10 AM - 1 PM at St Thomas, New Hartford

Chris Campbell, Jeff Sterly, and John Decker with presenters Pat Graybill and Timo Owens at the Deaf Leaders Retreat in early April near Albany.
They said it was “very nice” and “a good experience” and “helped me relax more and learn self-esteem”.They saw old friends and enjoyed meeting new friends. They “learned new things of God’s work” and how to be good leaders in teaching the young people.
Let us pray for them to continue
