SUMMER FUN IN THE SUN

Summer arrived with lots of sun and warmth. The Catholic Deaf Community gathered July 31st to celebrate together.  About 40 arrived to share Mass with Fr Peter Williams and the people of Holy Family- St Michael’s in Fulton and then have an enjoyable afternoon of food and fun.

Fr Peter spoke on the readings of the abundance of God’s blessings and how the miracle of feeding of the hungry crowd prepares us for the wonder of the Eucharistic Banquet ( receiving Jesus’ Body and Blood ).  What a special reminder in this Year of the Eucharist!

After Mass there was a pot luck dinner and then the presentation of the Thomas Johns Memorial Appreciation Award.  It is a special award given every two years to someone who has given much of him/herself to the Catholic Deaf Community as Thomas Johns himself did. The Award went to a very deserving couple: Mary and Robert Menotti.  Bea Murphy , who knows them so well, introduced them.

The afternoon continued with games for all: pie eating contest, balance skills, mummy-wrapping and apple-rolling races. There were also raffles that raised $103 to help send Deaf and KODA children to Camp Mark 7!

A BIG THANK YOU to the hard working Committee who put in so much hard work: Patty Parish, Mary and Robert Menotti, Frances and Bob Harmon, Elaine Coleman, and  Anne Parish.  Thank you to Mike Parish and Beth and Rob who helped set up.

Please pray for Fr Peter Williams.  As many of you may know, in June he announced to his parishioners that he would be leaving. 

The Bishop has granted him time to reflect.  His last day will be September 25th. 

This means a hard time ahead, but God can bring good out of everything.  Pray hard!
Please also remember in your prayers those who have died:
Florence Bouse, sister of Richard Coppola
Jennie Wilson, sister of Marion Baratta
Fr David Walsh, who worked with the Deaf across the country as an ICDA missionary
May they rest in peace.  May their families be comforted.

Congratulations to Suzi & Scott Trelease on the birth of Ashley Elizabeth on June 5th.  Hopefully we will have a picture of her Baptism in the next newsletter!

Have you been enjoying all the Summer Activities?  It has been a good year for all the picnics, and I have been to as many as I could.  Good times!

Now it is time to get ready for the next season:
School Time!  Is it just for the children?  No!  It is for all ages to review or learn!
Parents: have you signed up your children for Religion Classes in your parish?
Adults: have you decided to learn to be a part of your parish as a Reader or help with Communion at Mass?

This year there will Confirmation Classes for the older students at NYSSD.  Have YOU made Confirmation?
If not, and would like to, let Mary Margaret know!

This Fall a group of Deaf teens will join other teens from the Syracuse Diocese to travel to Atlanta, GA, to the National Catholic Youth Conference to learn with 25,000 other Catholic teens.  Mary Margaret will be busy preparing them for the experience.
