    A NEW DEAF PRIEST!

Father Paul Zirimenya, who is Deaf, was ordained in San Francisco on June 9th.
On June 10th he celebrated his first Mass at St Joseph’s Center for the Deaf in Union City.  What a weekend of joy as the Deaf Community welcomed another Deaf priest, one of only eight culturally Deaf priests here in the Untied States.

Father Paul was born in Kampala, Uganda.  At six years, he became deaf in an accident.  He went to school and graduated from Makrere College in 1999 with a degree in social work and social administration.  He worked as a teacher for Deaf adults in Kampala.

He was raised in the Anglican Church, and later met a priest who encouraged him to become a priest.  While taking philosophy classes at St Mbaaga Seminary in Uganda, he was accepted into the Catholic Church.

Fr Tom Coughlin welcomed him to the United States and helped him to reach his goal. Fr Paul graduated from St Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, CA.  He also spent time with the Deaf in Boston and Concord, MA.  Now he will serve the Deaf in the Diocese of Oakland, California.

Do you think of becoming a priest?  Fr Paul says, “To any Deaf person or person with any disability who would like to pursue a call to serve God as a priest, I say, God loves you and welcomes you to participate fully in his salvation plan.  Listen to him and follow your heart, and leave the rest to God.”                                                                            More about Fr Paul:  www.sjcd.org & The Catholic Voice Diocese of Oakland

This & That

 Jesus’ Challenges: This Summer’s Gospels

Summertime is a time to relax and enjoy yourself, right?   Yet every weekend, Jesus gave us a big challenge!
You can check them out in the Sunday readings from Luke’s gospel:
Follow me, ...Go out and spread the Good News, ....Love God and your neighbor, ...Don’t be greedy because your life is not your possessions but what matters to God, ...Know that there will be division, not peace, and you will be made fun of and hurt the same as He was.
He also encouraged us: Knock and the door will be opened, ...Ask and it will be given.
He also warned us: Be ready for the Master’s coming for you as you don’t know when that will be.

If we do follow Jesus, it is not an easy way.  We must love God above everything and talk to Him all the time .  We must think of others.  We must help others.  We must share what we have.  We can’t be comfortable.

If we do this, then when we die, God will not have to say,  “I don’t know where you are from.”  (That’s from August 26th’s Gospel)        Can we accept Jesus’ challenges?  Can we live as a true Catholic Christian?

(A few month’s ago the Question of the Month was to name the second Pope.  No one did!  He was St Linus!)

May their souls rest in peace:  Joan Judge, grandmother of Rachael Chmiel, and Harold Miller, step - grandfather of Keith Grant, Jr
