On June 24, 2000 a special event happened
that the Deaf Catholic community is excited about. Michael Depcik, born
deaf in Chicago January 1, 1970 was ordained a priest in the order of the
Oblates of St. Francis deSales. Father Mike's parents and two brothers
and two sisters are all deaf.
Father Mike went to St. Rita's School
for the Deaf in Cincinnati, the only Catholic Deaf residential school in
the United States. When he was 17, he was an exchange student and stayed
in Australia for a year. It was in Australia, living with hearing host
parents who were fundamentalist born-again Christians, that he kearned
about God in a personal way.
After graduating from St. Rita's Father
Mike attended Gallaudet University, and his faith journey continued. He
met Fr. Tom Coughlin, America's first born-deaf priest, and worked with
him at Camp Mark Seven. Father Mike felt called to study to be a priest
and became the first deaf man in the Oblates of St. Francis deSales.
Mary Margaret Van Damme and Jane Long
attended Fr. Mike's ordination and First Mass in Michigan and we are thrilled
to have him come to our diocese the first weekend in December so all of
our Catholic Deaf Community can meet him.

Does Fr. Mike look like the figure
in this stained glass window? The artist used him as a model a few years
ago for the chapel of the church where he was ordained.
