The Catholic Deaf Community of the Syracuse Diocese
AUGUST 2000 NEWS

Pat Graybill assists Fr. Mike Depcik
On June 24, 2000 a special event happened that the Deaf Catholic community is excited about. Michael Depcik, born deaf in Chicago January 1, 1970 was ordained a priest in the order of the Oblates of St. Francis deSales. Father Mike's parents and two brothers and two sisters are all deaf.

At the end of the ordination
Father Mike went to St. Rita's School for the Deaf in Cincinnati, the only Catholic Deaf residential school in the United States. When he was 17, he was an exchange student and stayed in Australia for a year. It was in Australia, living with hearing host parents who were fundamentalist born-again Christians, that he kearned about God in a personal way.

After graduating from St. Rita's Father Mike attended Gallaudet University, and his faith journey continued. He met Fr. Tom Coughlin, America's first born-deaf priest, and worked with him at Camp Mark Seven. Father Mike felt called to study to be a priest and became the first deaf man in the Oblates of St. Francis deSales.

Mary Margaret Van Damme and Jane Long attended Fr. Mike's ordination and First Mass in Michigan and we are thrilled to have him come to our diocese the first weekend in December so all of our Catholic Deaf Community can meet him.

Does Fr. Mike look like the figure in this stained glass window? The artist used him as a model a few years ago for the chapel of the church where he was ordained.

 OCTOBER 8TH
 JUBILEE YEAR 2000

 DEAF PILGRIMAGE DAY
to
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
        259 E Onondaga       Syracuse NY

Pope John-Paul II says,"The Jubilee celebration should confirm the
Christians of today in their FAITH in God who has revealed himself in Christ,
sustain their HOPE which reaches out in expectation of eternal life, and
rekindle their CHARITY in active service to their brothers and sisters."

Pilgrimage is a journey to a shrine or church for a special reason.  It helps us
understand that all of life is like a journey. A special indulgence* can be
gained also if you go to Confession,Mass and Communion, and pray for the
intentions of the Pope with the Our Father, the Creed, and the Hail Mary.

This is a special time to reflect on God who is love. A time to think about
how Jesus became human 2000 years ago.  What does this mean to me???
We must examine ourselves on our own responsibility for the evils of our
day.

2 PM   Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)
                               with Fr Peter A Williams
3 PM   Mass signed by Fr Peter A Williams
4 PM   Guided Tour of the Cathedral
5 PM   Dinner  (Reservation form below)

*Indulgence is the forgiveness of all temporal punishment due for sins that have already
been forgiven. (Like a forgiven thief must still pay back what he stole.) It can be for you
or for someone who has died.
