快樂之旅 Journey of Happiness: Attitude or Gratitude?

What is happiness? We are all in pursuit of it, yet it can mean different things for different people. As Christians, what does it mean to us? However an elusive concept it is to others, happiness in Christian life is one of gratitude: thank God for all that we have, no matter what.

Fr. Henri Nouwen once said, "To be grateful for all the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives - the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as moments of sorrow, the success as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections - that requires hard spiritual work."

Under the guidance of Jesus, we learned that having the right attitude towards life will enable us to become more like him. Christ's Sermon on the Mount taught us what it means to have a Christ-like attitude. The beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) expressed Jesus' approach to life. Happy people have troubles too; it is our attitude towards these rough spots that determines whether we remain happy or become miserable.

In the same sermon, Jesus called on us to be salt of the earth and light of the world. Aside from adopting his attitude, he also wants us to "shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing [our] good works, they may give the praise to [our] Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

May we, then, embark on a journey of happiness armed with gratitude and the right attitude, spreading God's love to others through our actions and live as Christ intends us to live.
