Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts!
"What... is more delightful than the voice of the Lord calling to us? See how the Lord in His love shows us the way of life." Prologue, Rule of St. Benedict
"And that everyone that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, wife, or children, or lands for My sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting"Matthew 19:29
St. Benedict was the founder and greatlegislator of western monasticism. Discusted with vice he found in Rome while studying as a young man, he abandoned everything and retired in a cave among the rocks of Subiaco where he led ahermit's life. Some monks who were living nearby were attracted to his saintly life, begged him to come and be their superior. He reluctantly accepted, but the monks could not take his corrections and made an attempt to take his life by placing poison in his goblet. When he made the sign of the cross over the goblet, it shattered.
St. Benedict founded 12 small monasteries and later taking a few monks with him, he traveled southward where he eventually builtMontecassino. AtMontecassino he wrote the Holy Rule which can be defined as a small compilation of the Gospel.
St. Benedict died during his 70th year, the date being traditinally established on March 21, 547. Since then there have been Benedictines in the Chruch and all over the world.
