Mattie Letham Community Room, Carousel Center, Syracuse, NY
Roll Call: Bea Murphy, Mary T DeMatteo-Vitale, Anne Parish, Patricia Parish, Mary Margaret Van Damme, Patrick J. Lynch, Marion Baratta
Excused: Jane Long, Mary & Robert Menotti, Elaine Coleman, Frances & Bob Harmon
Opening Prayer: President Patty Parish called the meeting to order at 6:20 PM. Anne Parish offered the opening prayer.
Minutes of the April 30, 2005, meeting were reviewed. MMVD corrected the date from April 3rd to the 30th. Bea Murphy moved to accept the Minutes, seconded by Anne Parish.
Corresponding Secretary, MM Van Damme, reported that there was no mail from the Council, but sent out in the name of the Catholic Deaf Community were: a card to Deacon Chris Engle in Whitesboro, home of the Deaf Community, plus many Mass cards for the deceased friends and relatives of the Catholic Deaf Community; and also our prayers and best wishes to Bishop James Moynihan at the time of his surgery.
Area Reports: Anne Parish asked about Whole Me and Bea Murphy answered, as she is on their board.
Old Business:
1) Brochure: Mary Margaret reports that it is still on hold due to time constraints.
2) 2006 Retreat/Cursillo: Mary Margaret informed everyone that a Sr. Rita has offered to give a retreat. The general consensus was not this time, but to research it for later. MM also explained that the Cursillo is being held in NYC in October. That is a wonderful opportunity for adults. It appears that one Fall there is a Cursillo for adults, and the next Fall there is the NCYC for the youth.
3) Goals: MM compiled the “Goals Forms” from the last meeting and handed out the results.(See attached.) Marion says that we are already doing them locally.
New Business:
1) Summer Picnic: Last & next: It was agreed that the picnic in July 2005 was a success. A discussion followed about the next one. It was agreed that there are so many activities held during the summer some of which are: picnics, golf, Oswego Fest, and the State Fair. MM suggested that the Thomas Johns Memorial Appreciation Award be given at the Palm Sunday Dinner with the Bishop. It was agreed that was a good idea.
If we can come up with something new and exciting for the Catholic Deaf Community to host, that would be wonderful.
2) Interpreters: What to do: MM brought up the problem of not having enough interpreters. Discussion followed about the pay and the skill levels. MM will still ask for higher pay. Everyone should find new and willing interpreters. Anne suggested the Syracuse group HITS as a possible resource.
3) Chaplain & Director: as people had to leave, MM just asked that people look for a priest who would be willing to learn sign. Also, to think of someone who could be the Director in the future, as she needs to be replaced in the not too distant future. Anne Parish asked about the qualifications. MM will bring them next time.
Announcements: A Deaf Group meets at Panera’s Bread in Cicero on Fridays.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, November 7th 2006, at Mary Margaret’s home
Adjournment: Mary Margaret moved that the meeting be closed, seconded by Pat Lynch.
The meeting ended approximately 8:15 PM.
