                                                 READY FOR SUNDAY?

Oct 2 & 3, 1999   Is 5:1-7 / Ps 80: 9, 12-16,19-20 /Phil 4:6-9 / Mt 21:33-43
The king in today's gospel entrusted his land to the tenants.  They did not own the land.  Our children are entrusted to us.  We do not own them.  "When the owner of the vineland comes" how will he judge your parenting efforts?

Oct 9 & 10, 1999  Is 25: 6-10 / Ps 23: 1-6 / Phil 4:12-14,19-20 / Mt 22:1-14
The king in today's gospel sent wedding invitatons to all his close friends...people like himself.  But the party wasn't successful until he opened the doors to people not like himself.  The Christian family opens its hearts and doors to everyone because we know that happiness is discovered in sharing.

Oct 16 & 17, 1999   Is 45: 1,4-6 / Ps 96: 1,3,4-5,7-8,9-10 / 1 Thes 1:1-5 / Mt 22:15-21
Differences are inevitable in family life.  But don't be like the Pharisees in today's gospel who were trying to trap Jesus.  They didn't care about the truth.  They just wanted to win!  To be right!  Peace can exist only when we pursue the truth with love.

Oct 23 & 24, 1999   Ex 22:20 -26 / Ps 18: 2-4, 47, 51 / 1 Thes 1:5-10 / Mt 22: 34-40
It is cute when children dress in Halloween costumes and pretend, but it is sad when adults pretend to be someone else.  In our own families we must love, affirm and appreciate others for who they are and not for who we want them to be.  Today  Jesus tells us to "love your neighbor"!  Our closest neighbor is right in our family.

Oct 30 & 31, 1999   Mal 1:14-2:8-10 / Ps 131:1,2,3 / 1 The 2:7-9,13 / Mt 23:1-12
Jesus reminds us today that we "are all students".  God isn't finished with us yet.  Our family is a group of unfinished people.  When we help each other grow and develop we become partners with God and God with us.

(The "Catholic Calendar" on the web seems to be down, perhaps permanently.)
